FIFA Calendar Break: A Double-Edged Sword for PSL Clubs

The international FIFA break, scheduled from September 21 to October 6, presents a situation with both pros and cons for leading PSL clubs, especially following a demanding start to the domestic season which began in early August. This pause has both positive and negative aspects.

Positive Aspects

Sufficient Time to Recover

Matches have been very frequent since the start of the season. Teams participating in multiple tournaments—such as Orlando Pirates, who compete in the Betway Premiership, MTN8, and CAF Champions League—have had little time to rest. This break will allow coaches to structure training sessions more effectively and maintain team concentration ahead of upcoming games.

Opportunity for Players to Rest

Although coaches often believe that momentum helps a team, excessive workload makes players vulnerable to injuries and burnout. For instance, striker AmaZulu Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya scored seven goals in the first seven league matches, but he clearly needs rest to maintain such form.

Time to Prepare for CAF Competitions

The final qualifying round of continental club tournaments begins immediately after the FIFA break. Since continental opponents require different tactical preparation than local rivals, the technical teams of Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, and Durban City will benefit from the extra preparation time.

Disadvantages

Risk of Losing Momentum

Although teams and players are given much-needed rest, there is a risk of losing rhythm. Kaizer Chiefs usually start seasons successfully; however, defender Dillan Solomons expressed concern about how the team often goes through a difficult period immediately after the FIFA break. He hopes this trend will not repeat after an uncompromising campaign start.

Potential Issues with National Team Duty

The period between club and national team appearances is unusually short. As a result, players who regularly feature for both their club and country face either severe fatigue or an increased risk of injury. Furthermore, the intensity of international matches makes players susceptible to flare-ups of minor existing injuries.

Closure of the Transfer Window

The PSL transfer window closes on September 21. If regular players sustain injuries while fulfilling national duties, clubs that failed to strengthen their squads may face serious difficulties. This timing overlap guarantees a tense period for many management teams.
