A prestigious law college in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, has become the center of extremely shameful and serious allegations. Students from Surendranath Law College claimed that 'hotel-style rooms' were equipped on the campus grounds, which were used not only for educational purposes. Furthermore, the students were threatened with these rooms and subjected to unethical pressure to achieve a 'compromise'.
The situation escalated when riots broke out because students were denied entry to the exams due to low attendance. Activists from ABVP and other students intensified the protests. During these demonstrations, sixth-semester student Nilanjana Bhattacharya addressed the press and made a shocking statement.
Nilanjana leveled direct accusations against the president of the college's governing council and local TMC leader Debashish Banerjee, known as 'Kan Kata Debu'. At the press conference, she stated: 'Our college has rooms resembling hotels. The money spent on our education fees was used to build these rooms. Female students were constantly asked for a 'compromise', and they were threatened during protests.'
Former vice-president of the college, Mohammadi Tarnnum, also confirmed these allegations, sharing several startling details in an interview with Aaj Tak. She acknowledged the existence of two rooms in the college equipped with beds, pillows, and attached bathrooms. The administration explained that these premises were intended for external seminar guests, but she was unaware of what was actually happening inside.
The former vice-president also reported that, given the seriousness of the situation, she approached the Commission for Women's Affairs. She stated that she had appealed to the Minister of Education and even the Chief Minister over the past 15 years, but no action had been taken.
Mohammadi Tarnnum leveled serious accusations against TMC leader Debashish Banerjee for creating a 'culture of intimidation' within the college. She recounted: 'Every time I opposed illegal activities, Debashish Banerjee threatened me. He said someone could cut your throat in the street, and no one would know about it. He even threatened to kidnap my son.'
Currently, thanks to mass protests by student organizations and the active stance of the BJP on social media, this issue has gained political resonance. Students and college staff are demanding a thorough investigation into this syndicate and strict action against those responsible.
