Diuweil Malonga leads culinary revolution in Africa

Diuweil Malonga has become one of the world's most famous chefs after a long journey of self-improvement. After his parents' death, he moved to Germany to live with his sister, where he developed an interest in cuisine and received training at prestigious institutions in Europe.

However, his life changed when a friend asked him what people eat in Africa. Feeling incompetent in this area, Diuweil spent two years traveling across the continent. During this time, he studied local ingredients, spices, culinary traditions, and what he calls the 'grandmother's school'—the authenticity of local flavors.

Based on this experience and possessing numerous phone numbers, Diuweil decided to create an online platform to connect African chefs with opportunities. Soon, aspiring chefs from all over the continent began coming to him to train in Rwanda, where he decided to settle down.

He opened a restaurant in Kigali and soon assembled a team of young Rwandans, as well as other Africans, creating dishes that brought them fame. Soon, people from all over the world started coming to taste his culinary creations.

Qatar Airways approached him to develop a business class menu, and later the famous football club Paris Saint-Germain wanted to provide its team with delicious food. Diuweil decided to build his dream restaurant on a picturesque lake in northern Rwanda, near the borders of Uganda and the DRC.

The stunning views, abundance of local produce, and the innovative spirit of his team have turned this place into a popular destination for A-list Hollywood actors, musicians, influential politicians, and young entrepreneurs. The local community has warmly welcomed Meza Malonga; he hires locals to grow the vegetables, fruits, and spices that form the basis of the restaurant's menu. Local hotels and tourist attractions are interested in including his establishment in their list of special attractions for their guests. He jokes that some call him the mayor of the peninsula.

While his culinary talent is a key factor in his success, his ability to network with other young African gourmets has also been indispensable to him. His team operates without a rigid hierarchy, offering ideas both in the dining room and in the kitchen, making a meal at Meza Malonga a unique daily experience. Employees have their own ambitions; many dream of opening their own restaurants, and Diuweil supports them by offering advice, assistance, and freedom to realize their ideas while they are in his 'nest.'

For Diuweil, life is not just about food. He is a passionate outdoor enthusiast, kayaking on the lake every day. His fit physique testifies to the time he spends in the gym and running along the lake to relieve stress and enjoy the surrounding beauty. He also does not stop traveling. Business brought him to Paris in 2024, where he was developing a menu for the Francophonie Summit. This year, he visited the USA, where he cooked for the French national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He jokes that friends think he only cooks to fund his trips, and thanks to this, he finds many new places to explore, especially in Africa. One should not expect Diuweil to settle down anytime soon. Although he jokes that he and his team might become billionaires, it is not impossible. But with such an ambitious mindset, it is hard to imagine him being tied to one place forever. One can be sure that whatever challenge Diuweil takes on next, his creativity and the support of friends and family will bring surprises, success, and something new to enjoy.
