How to recognize relationship situationships: signs of love, connection, or uncertainty

Thanks to dating apps, Instagram messages, and constant online presence, establishing contact has become significantly easier. Two people communicate daily, meet up, share memes and personal stories, gradually developing emotional or physical intimacy. This all looks like a full-fledged relationship, yet what exactly exists between them remains unclear.

When the question about the future is constantly met with an answer like 'we'll see where this leads,' such uncertainty may indicate a 'situationship.' The problem in these connections is not only the lack of an official status; the real difficulty arises when both partners interpret the same interaction differently. Perhaps one sees it as developing toward a serious relationship, while the other wishes to keep it strictly informal.

There are several signs that help distinguish a genuine bond from a drawn-out situation. Firstly, there are evasive answers when discussing the future. If you bring up topics of exclusivity or future plans, and your interlocutor changes the subject every time, it is reason to think. Although sometimes avoiding conversations about the future can be normal, if it happens constantly, your expectations are likely diverging.

Secondly, there is a lack of consistency in communication. There might be hours-long conversations, continuous messages, and great attention, followed suddenly by ignoring. If a person becomes very close when they feel like it, and then disappears without explanation, it calls into question the stability of the connection.

The third sign is the contrast between private and public life. Private communication might resemble a couple's relationship, but if your partner avoids introducing you as part of their life to friends or on social media, this is also a warning sign. While not everyone wants to make their relationship public, confidentiality and secrecy are different things. Privacy implies mutual understanding of the situation, whereas secrecy means one partner wants to hide you.

In situationships, a conflict of expectations often arises: one partner may see a path to a serious relationship in this connection, while the other initially wanted to maintain it in a casual format. This is where the greatest confusion occurs. Sometimes we tend to judge a person not by their current behavior, but by their potential, thinking: 'Maybe they will change their mind in the future, even if they are not ready for commitment now.' However, loving a person's potential and understanding their real intentions are two completely different processes.

Furthermore, it is worth noting whether these relationships bring you joy or more stress. The main question is not how much your partner loves you, but what feelings this connection evokes in you. If you are constantly waiting for an answer, trying to decipher another person's behavior, and after every conversation wondering if they want to be with you, perhaps you need clarity more than the connection itself.

Exiting a situationship does not always mean its end. First and foremost, you need to have an open conversation with your partner. Ask how they see this connection, and clearly state your own desires. It is possible that your expectations align, and the relationship can develop. It is also possible that you want different things. In any case, clarity is critically important, as continuing to hope in a state of confusion can be much harder than learning another person's true intentions.
