All attention is focused on the selection of the Indian squad for the three-match ODI series against the West Indies, which begins on September 27th. The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, will make the team selection on Wednesday. It is important to note that this will be the committee's last meeting in its current term, which ends in early October.
However, this meeting will decide not only the composition for one series. Since there is about a year left until the 2027 ODI World Cup, the team management faces several important questions. The most significant issue concerns Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya.
Rohit Sharma has made it clear that he wishes to participate in the 2027 ODI World Cup. Nevertheless, signals from selectors and the board regarding his future remain unclear. Previously, during a visit to England in July, it was reported that selectors were discussing plans for Rohit's progression. However, BCCI secretary Devdutt Sangak later refuted these discussions, stating that Rohit is still part of India's ODI plans.
The discussion about Rohit's future intensified after his performance in the ODI match in Cardiff in England, where he scored 26 runs off 47 balls. Before that, in the home series against Afghanistan, he scored 16, 48, and 79 runs. Although his play was not bad, it could not be described as impressive. Meanwhile, in the previous ODI match, Rohit scored a century, which was marked in his last ODI match at Lord's.
Questions about Rohit's future also arose because in October 2025, selectors replaced him with Shubman Gill as the captain of India in ODIs. This decision was taken just a few months after winning the Champions Trophy. Nevertheless, the meeting on Wednesday could significantly clarify Rohit's future in the ODI format.
The second major question concerns Hardik Pandya. Hardik, an all-rounder specializing in fast bowling, did not participate in the IPL 2026 season. His return has been repeatedly postponed due to injuries. In June, he was included in the squad for the ODI series against Afghanistan but sustained a leg injury before the series began and was dropped. Furthermore, in IPL 2026, he was unable to play in four matches for Mumbai Indians, suffering from a back spasm.
After this, Hardik worked on physical fitness at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, but he encountered another injury there. Hardik is expected to undergo a fitness test next week and, hopefully, pass it. However, selectors are unlikely to rush him into the series against the West Indies, as Hardik is crucial for the balance of the team in the 50-over format.
Therefore, the India A and Australia A matches, starting on October 6th in Puducherry, might be a more suitable platform for his return. Selectors currently prefer Hardik to focus on 50-over cricket rather than T20I, which is considered an important plan considering the 2027 World Cup.
Selectors also face difficulties in finding a replacement for Hardik. Nitish Kumar Reddy, Akshar Patel, Shivam Dube, and Washington Sundar are part of the Asian Games squad. Additionally, the left-arm spin all-rounder Harsh Dube and Shahbaz Ahmed are injured. In such a situation, selectors might once again look at Ravindra Jadeja.
Jadeja has not been a consistent part of the ODI squad in the last year. He also missed the series against Afghanistan and has not played in this format since January 2026. Another option might be unexpected. Kunal Pandya from Royal Challengers Bengaluru played a key role in the team's two championship victories in the last two IPL seasons. Therefore, giving him a chance might also be considered.
An interesting match could also occur in the wicket-keeper position. K.L. Rahul is likely to remain the preferred wicket-keeper. However, due to Ishan Kishan's participation in the Asian Games campaign, competition may arise between Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel for the reserve wicket-keeper spot. Pant has not played in ODIs for over two years.
Jurel has yet to debut for India in ODIs. However, his recent performance strengthened his claim. In Sri Lanka, he scored an unbeaten 115 runs, marking his second century in his Test career. Regardless of who is selected from these two, he will not be limited to the role of a reserve wicket-keeper. In the absence of Shreyas Iyer, he could also become a substitute middle-order batsman. Shreyas is currently leading the Indian team at the Asian Games in Japan.
Nevertheless, players who do not make the ODI squad will not have to stay away from top-level cricket for long. These players are expected to be part of the Rest of India team, which will participate in the Iran Cup in Srinagar from October 1st to 5th. The Rest of India team will play against the Ranji Trophy Jammu-K champion.
