Google launches Gemini with reasoning capability during voice conversations

Google announced two new artificial intelligence (AI) models focused on voice interactions on Tuesday (15): Gemini 3.8 Live and Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking. The company developed these innovations with the goal of making AI conversations more sophisticated and natural, as well as enabling systems to perform complex tasks while maintaining dialogue with the user.

These models represent Google's most advanced versions for real-time dialogues. The fundamental distinction lies in the reasoning ability: while Gemini 3.8 Live prioritizes high-efficiency and scalable voice interactions, Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking incorporates deeper reasoning functionalities and multi-stage processing.

Simultaneous Reasoning Capability

Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking goes beyond mere conversation; it is designed to manage more intricate tasks that require processing and logic across multiple steps. A notable aspect highlighted by Google is the AI's ability to reason and speak simultaneously. This allows the system to remain engaged with the user while performing more extensive work.

Instead of remaining silent during processing, the system can emit natural responses, using phrases like 'let me check that for you,' while executing necessary steps in the background. Additionally, the AI has the capacity to detail the progress of complex tasks as they are completed.

Integration into Products and Services

The new features will not be limited to application development. Google is implementing Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking across various products and services. In Google Workspace, this technology will be integrated into voice features for Docs, Gmail, and Keep. For example, the Docs Live feature allows users to use voice commands to perform actions within a document. Similar principles are applied to Gmail Live and Keep Live.

The model is also being introduced in Search Live, facilitating voice interactions that include real-time guidance and step-by-step instructions. Google also presented test results to prove the capabilities of Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking. The model achieved first place overall, scoring 82.6 points in the Speech to Speech Quality Index, developed by Artificial Analysis, which measures the quality of voice interaction. In another test, τ-Voice, focused on agent task execution, scored 68.6%, and in the τ-Voice-banking benchmark, specific to finance, registered 35.1%.

Gemini 3.8 Live is already accessible to developers through the Gemini API and Google AI Studio. Companies can gain access via a private preview of Gemini Enterprise, while general users can use it through Search Live. Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking has also begun to be made available on the Gemini API and Google AI Studio for developers and is available in private preview in Gemini Enterprise. For end-users, the technology is being incorporated into the Gemini app and Workspace features. In Google Docs, the feature is available to subscribers of Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra plans, while Gmail Live and Keep Live are reaching subscribers of Google AI Plus, Google AI Pro, and Google AI Ultra plans.

Brazil launches rocket to test parachute return system

Brazil launched the VS-30 V16 rocket on Tuesday (the 15th), which delivered the Reusable Suborbital Microgravity Platform (PSM-R) from the Barrier Ada Launch Center (CLBI) in Parnamirim (RN). This mission is part of Operation Potiguar 2 and had the main goal of testing the platform's parachute return system under real flight conditions.

Operation Potiguar 2 runs from August 31st to September 19th and continues the first stage conducted in 2024, when the procedures and launch-related systems were tested. In this second phase, the focus shifted to qualifying the in-flight system, which must ensure the return of the PSM-R after the suborbital trajectory.

The PSM-R is part of the Brazilian Space Agency's (AEB) Microgravity Program and is being developed by the Institute of Aeronautics and Space (IAE), Orbital Engenharia, and the agency itself. The platform is designed to support experiments during flight, providing power, transmitting telemetry data, and controlling its orientation.

The launch was carried out by the VS-30 V16, a single-stage suborbital research vehicle developed by IAE. The rocket uses solid fuel, has a track, and is equipped with aerodynamic and rotational stabilization. It is designed to deliver payloads to an altitude exceeding 100 kilometers, allowing experiments to be conducted in microgravity conditions during part of the flight.

PSM-R is expected to reach an apogee of approximately 150 kilometers, based on previous flights. AEB also reported that in its current configuration, the platform has dimensions and mass similar to a typical VS-30 payload, and it represents the largest and heaviest payload ever launched by VS-30.

The VS-30 V16 has a length of about nine meters, a maximum diameter of 600 millimeters, and a total mass of about 1.6 tons. The payload is estimated at 401 kg.

PSM-R carried four modules for scientific and technological experiments, resulting from AEB partnerships with institutions and companies. Three technologies developed or tested by IAE were also placed aboard.

Details of Scientific Experiments

One of the experiments is the Analysis of Microgravity Effects on Microorganisms (AEMM) from Rede Space Farming Brasil, which brings together institutions such as ITA, Embrapa, USP, and INPE. The study assesses the impact of microgravity on microorganisms during suborbital flight, as well as the effect of vibrations on cellular viability.

Two agricultural bacteria are used in this experiment: Bradyrhizobium spp. and Azospirillum brasilense. The first participates in biological nitrogen fixation in soybeans, while the second promotes root development and water and nutrient uptake.

Samples were lyophilized and placed in plastic tubes inside small modules. The experiment also includes graphene biosensors and dosimeters to measure ionizing radiation. After returning, the samples will be analyzed to assess the impact of launch, microgravity, and descent on the microorganisms.

Another experiment, named CTM-Sec and developed by R-CRIO, studies the influence of extreme suborbital flight conditions on the secretome of mesenchymal stem cells. The secretome consists of bioactive proteins, growth factors, and extracellular vesicles produced by cells and possessing therapeutic potential.

The payload also carries MundoTec, a microgravity experiment platform from SENAI CIMATEC. This initiative includes three tests related to acceleration changes and oscillations, with an educational focus on physics and mathematics applicable to space travel.

The fourth experiment is the testing of Antenna for CubeSat Telemetry from Tycho Space, which will evaluate the performance of the antenna for CubeSats under real launch conditions.

In addition to the experiments supported by AEB, PSM-R transports three technologies developed or tested by IAE. One of them is the Pyrotechnic Interface System (SIP), designed to enhance the safety of pyrotechnic lines and enable remote testing and arming in research vehicles and accelerators.

On board is also Bat Li-Ion, a high-energy density battery produced by IAE for use in suborbital vehicles. RangeLoRa, developed in collaboration with the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA), uses LoRa technology to transmit information aiding in the localization of the payload after landing.

The return of the rocket-launched platform is part of the mission logic itself. After the suborbital trajectory, PSM-R must return using a parachute and then be located and recovered at sea. For this, FAB teams conducted training on communication procedures, checklists, and helicopter positioning maneuvers.

The data obtained during the flight will be used to evaluate the performance of the return system and may contribute to future research in the field of microgravity. The mission is also aimed at generating knowledge and improving qualifications in engineering, science, and space technologies.

The debate about the ideal pace for the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has gained a new layer of complexity in the United States. After warnings emerged about the inherent dangers of the technology and calls to slow down the development of the most sophisticated models, two distinct groups have emerged in the discussion on AI safety and regulation.

One side of this debate includes U.S. President Donald Trump, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and former White House cryptocurrency chief David Sacks. On the other side are Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, entrepreneur Elon Musk, and various AI researchers.

This scenario brings together political adversaries and former competitors in the tech sector, all positioned differently on how to manage the risks associated with AI progress.

OpenAI's Stance on Deceleration

Sarah Friar, Chief Financial Officer of OpenAI, told CNBC that she is not concerned about a potential slowdown in the development speed of cutting-edge AI systems. She argued that even if progress were halted at that moment, 'the amount of intelligence available in the world is immense.' Friar clarified that OpenAI will maintain its investment decisions focused on achieving a 'strong return on investment' (ROI), even if technological development needs to occur at a slower pace.

Additionally, she mentioned that she is not particularly apprehensive about the possibility of AI agents using weapons of mass destruction to kill people, but emphasized the need to treat safety seriously. She stated: 'And if that means we need to dial back the frontier and slow down, absolutely, we will listen to our researchers and do it.' As CFO, she added that her responsibility would be to make business decisions based on this guidance, affirming: 'We are dialing back this frontier and taking safety and alignment very seriously.'

Anthropic's Proposal for Development Moderation

During an event held by Salesforce in San Francisco (USA), Dario Amodei reiterated his support for slowing down AI development, presenting a suggestion based on three measures. Anthropic has already committed to the first of these proposals. Amodei drew an analogy with the automotive industry, explaining that when a manufacturer faces a serious safety issue, such as a brake failure, other companies should use that incident as an opportunity to review their own practices. He pondered: 'It is very tempting to attack your competitor and say they are not safe. But I think the most responsible way to respond is to look at our own history.'

The executive also expressed surprise at the speed of AI progress and its economic impacts, stating: 'It was the pace of progress—not just of the technology, but also of the economic side.'

Trump's Rejection of AI Risks and Focus on Competition

On the other hand, Trump has publicly rejected warnings about AI risks. In several posts on the Truth Social network, the president labeled fears of uncontrolled AI as a 'farce' and a 'fraud.' Trump also criticized resistance to installing new data centers in the United States, suggesting that those opposing such projects would be benefiting interests contrary to expansion, including, according to his analysis, China.

On Monday (14), Trump called during an interview with Jensen Huang at the All-In Summit event in Los Angeles (USA), broadcasting his message directly to the tech industry audience. Huang responded to the president: 'You are right. We will not let that happen, sir.' Scott Bessent, U.S. Treasury Secretary, confirmed in testimony to Congress that Trump is 'completely aligned' with Huang.

Huang reinforced this stance at the Dreamforce event, stating: 'We do not need new laws. We do not need new regulations.' According to him, corporations should simply determine when their systems are ready and proceed with rapid evolution. On another occasion, the Nvidia CEO summarized his vision with the phrase: 'Run as fast as you can.'

The Nvidia CEO also dismissed concerns about a possible widespread job collapse caused by AI, classifying such a scenario as 'completely absurd.' For Huang, the use of AI will become central to practically all companies, as 'all companies, all organizations... will become an AI company.'

Technological rivalry with China is one of the main arguments presented by the group opposing deceleration. Part of the Trump administration's message is that restricting regulation is crucial for the United States to maintain its advantage in the AI race. Trump stated on Sunday that 'whoever wins AI wins.'

David Sacks, who currently serves as co-chair of the President's Advisory Council on Science and Technology, also advocated for companies to continue advancing. He requested that companies 'advance the frontier,' but criticized the argument that the motivation to decelerate was 'purely altruistic.'

Emil Michael, Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, adopted a similar perspective. In an interview with Fox News, he alleged that current warnings are part of a campaign orchestrated by individuals, ideologies, and NGOs interested in alarming the American public.

Mike Johnson, Speaker of the House of Representatives, also declared that Trump plans to gather AI industry leaders at the White House 'within the next week.' Johnson also refuted warnings about a possible technological collapse, saying that Trump's message is that people will not all be dead in ten years, and that this would be a 'farce.'

Political Alliances in Defense of AI Control

The movement in favor of greater control over AI has also fostered unique alliances in U.S. politics. On Tuesday (15), Senator Bernie Sanders, a Democrat from Vermont, Representative Chip Roy, a Republican from Texas, and Steve Bannon, a former White House strategist, participated in an event in Washington supporting AI-related measures.

Despite having different political views on various issues, they united with the group advocating some form of response to the risks associated with technological advancement. Thus, the debate began to encompass not only competing AI companies but also members of different political spectrums.

This division gained more strength when some of the world's largest AI companies began publicly debating the risks related to the development of increasingly advanced models. Amodei advocates for the industry to create independent international evaluation and coordination mechanisms. Altman has moved closer to this position, and Musk has also expressed support for the call for deceleration.

Huang, on the other hand, insists that development must proceed rapidly and that new legislation and regulations are unnecessary. Trump follows this line of reasoning, linking the pace of AI to technological competition with China. This confrontation occurs while OpenAI and Anthropic move toward possible Initial Public Offerings (IPOs). Both companies are among those that could conduct large IPOs, with Altman signaling that OpenAI intends to postpone its offering until next year due to recent safety concerns.

The discussion places at the center of the American debate an issue that spans technology, security, economy, and international competition: what is the limit to AI advancement before new control measures are implemented?

The issue of AI risks has also brought together, in an atypical way, Senator Bernie Sanders and strategist Steve Bannon, figures from opposite ends of American politics. Both participated in the 'Pro-Human Assembly' in Washington (USA), advocating for stricter rules for AI and criticizing the concentration of power in the hands of large technology corporations.

However, this convergence is limited to this point. Sanders framed AI as a global risk, comparable to the nuclear race, and called for an international agreement to suspend the development of advanced systems. Bannon, on the other hand, addressed the technological dispute with China from the perspective of power, advocating for the country's isolation from the American ecosystem of research, finance, and technology.

Sanders stated: 'A superintelligent AI that escapes human control will not be an American problem. It will not be a Chinese problem. It will be a problem for humanity.' The senator also hoped that Donald Trump would negotiate with Chinese President Xi Jinping a treaty to establish a pause in advanced AI development and a ban on superintelligence. Bannon adopted a different stance: 'No agreements, no treaties: you are out of the AI business because we are going to dismantle your ecosystem.' The strategist also declared that 'American citizens will no longer be supplicants to oligarchs.'
