Developer Bungie has changed its plans for the game Marathon, announcing that the next major update has been rescheduled from September 22nd to December 8th. Furthermore, the company confirmed that it will stop following a rigid season schedule.
This change comes at a time when the service shooter is facing challenges in expanding its player base. Bungie stated that the new strategic approach will allow more time to be dedicated to developing substantial updates and addressing the most relevant criticisms received since the game's launch.
The material scheduled for September will be integrated into the update called Symbiosis, scheduled for December 8th. This package will include a new Runner shell, a permanent PvE experience, a redesign of the Perimeter area, a social space with training functionality, an experimental TDM mode, and several improvements to the new user experience.
The PvE component is considered one of the pillars for increasing Marathon's diversity, although its arrival is now expected almost three months after initially planned. Before that, Bungie will release a minor update on October 6th, which will serve to reset the game's economy and progression, in addition to updating rewards and improving the current experience.
However, the most impactful modification lies in Marathon's future update methodology. Bungie ratified the abandonment of the model of major releases tied to seasons and predetermined dates, aiming to give greater flexibility to the development, testing, and refinement process of new features before they are made available.
The studio mentioned that it agreed with community feedback, stating: 'Since the launch, you have told us that Marathon needs more depth, more variety, better progression, and more reasons to keep playing in the long term. We agree.' According to Bungie, responding to such criticisms requires changes both in generated content and in how this content reaches players.
This tactical shift raises questions about Marathon's ability to consolidate itself as a long-term service game. Despite having an engaged community, the title still needs to capture a larger audience to justify the costs inherent in its continuous maintenance and development. For this reason, the December update carries even greater weight, as, in addition to presenting the expected PvE, Symbiosis will be one of the first major tests of Bungie's new strategy to increase Marathon's variety and player retention.
