When she was only twenty years old, she noticed changes in the forest. Illegal logging was increasing, and the forest that sustained her village was gradually depleting.
Kandoni filed complaints and approached officials, but the situation did not change. Therefore, in 2011, she decided to act differently and united the women from her village.
Five women joined Kandoni to form the organization Hariyal Sakam, which translates to 'green leaf'. They began daily patrols of the forest, monitoring illegal loggers and reporting violators to the authorities.
As their efforts began to bear fruit, they received recognition and gratitude. The group of five women grew to forty people. Today, they work in four groups, conducting shift duty for round-the-clock forest surveillance.
Armed with sticks, bows, and arrows for self-defense, the women patrol designated areas, paying special attention to remote high-risk zones. Furthermore, visitors and WhatsApp groups warn them about any suspicious activities.
Their vigilance helped reduce illegal logging by 80–90%. Even after Kandoni became a home guard for the Jamshedpur police in 2018, she did not stop her activities. After work, she continues to participate in evening and night patrols.
Her colleagues call her 'Sherni', and the villagers call her 'Jungle ki Sherni'. Kandoni Soren and forty women protect 250 acres of forest, safeguarding the resource upon which their community depends.
