China has expressed its desire to develop an open-source artificial intelligence (AI) system intended to be used and improved by BRICS members and their partners. This suggestion was presented by Chinese President Xi Jinping during the bloc's meeting held in New Delhi, India.
The central objective of this initiative is to intensify technological collaboration among participants and decrease reliance on solutions created by American corporations. The plan includes implementing a cloud platform for the bloc's digital environment, as well as programs focused on training new specialists.
According to Xi, countries could exchange technological knowledge to generate new AI models and applications. The cloud platform would be accessible to the entire group's digital ecosystem. Furthermore, the project contemplates scientific exchange and capacity building, seeking to strengthen ties between members in areas such as infrastructure and knowledge, thus contributing to a more solid digital economy.
Among the proposed guidelines, Xi emphasized the rising role of the Global South while advocating for the unity of the countries. He stated: 'We are at a moment when unprecedented changes in a century are accelerating around the world. The Global South, with its collective rise, has become a crucial factor in global multipolarity.'
The scope of the project transcends mere system creation; Xi also advocated for establishing international standards to prevent what he termed 'chaos and disorder' related to artificial intelligence. In the Chinese president's view, such regulations must be formulated with the participation of all nations and ensure the equitable application of laws.
Additionally, China offered its support to BRICS members in building smart factories and developing standards and norms, with the goal of jointly boosting the modernization of the industrial sector.
AI was a topic debated by the leaders at the summit. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, criticized the use of essential minerals and technology as tools of diplomatic pressure, arguing that this restricts access to innovations and can concentrate them in a few nations.
Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, defended a reform in global governance, considering this change essential to ensure the integration of BRICS countries regarding the shared use of artificial intelligence. With this proposal, China centralizes the bloc's cooperation on AI development, professional qualification, and technological infrastructure creation.
