A small amount of hair loss is sometimes normal, but if you find a lot of hair on your hands after brushing or washing your hair, this should not be ignored, as it may indicate the beginning of hair loss. There are many reasons for this phenomenon, including lack of sleep, stress, and improper nutrition.
According to the dermatologist, if hair problems appear, a series of examinations should be undergone upon the doctor's recommendation. Dermatologist Dr. Saumya Sachdeva from Max Hospital explains that it is first recommended to take a blood test (CBC test) to rule out anemia, as blood deficiency can also cause hair loss.
Additionally, testing ferritin may be recommended, which provides information about iron stores in the body. Hair problems can also be related to thyroid dysfunction; in such cases, the TSH test is initially prescribed, and if necessary, the doctor may order additional tests such as T3 and T4. If the thyroid gland is functioning incorrectly, treatment to normalize it is started first, which will help stop hair loss.
If hair loss is accompanied by weight changes, severe fatigue, increased sensitivity to cold or heat, constipation, or rapid heartbeat, you should consult a doctor. Deficiencies in vitamins B12 and D can also be a cause of hair loss, although this is not always the sole reason.
Hair loss rarely has a single cause; in some cases, it can be genetic. Furthermore, factors such as stress, lack of sleep, and an unbalanced diet also play a role. Therefore, if your hair becomes noticeably thinner or bald patches appear on your head, it is best to consult a dermatologist. After examining the hair and scalp, the doctor will determine which specific tests are necessary to establish the true cause.
