South Africa's Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gaiton McKenzie, shared on social media his experience attending the JAŸ-Z30 concert. He stated that while participating in the Lumiere film summit in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France, on September 7, 2026, he received an invitation from Roc Nation to meet with them and attend the widely discussed global show.
McKenzie also stated that he insisted this cultural phenomenon should be brought to fans in South Africa. He wrote: 'Learning that I was in France for the Lumiere film summit, Roc Nation invited me to meet them and their executives and see the most talked-about show in the world, the Jay-Z30 concert. I insisted that this cultural phenomenon simply needs to be brought to the fans in SA.'
Bonang calls for support for local artists
Despite South Africans enjoying concerts, especially international acts, many, including media personality Bonang Matheba, quickly pointed out the need to focus on local initiatives before organizing a Jay-Z concert. Matheba asked in her tweet: 'Bring it to SA? Why? What about SAMAs? SAFTAs? Local people need money, sir!! Let's start with that!!'
Another user, NeneMellow, also commented, noting that the industry never develops or gets funded despite the popularity of South African entertainment. He added: 'You always follow the wave of South African entertainment, but you never build or fund the industry. Artists are begging for support! It's time to show real support, you are nowhere to be found! EXCEPT when Jay-Z is mentioned! Chasing fame!'
During his visit to the concert, McKenzie managed to take a photo with American DJ and rapper DJ Khaled, which was published on Instagram. Roc Nation is an American entertainment company founded by rapper Jay-Z in 2008. The JAŸ-Z30 concert is an annual cultural celebration and stadium tour launched in 2026 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Jay-Z's debut album 'Reasonable Doubt' and the 25th anniversary of 'The Blueprint.'
