Henry Pollock, an England international player in the number 8 position, stated that he will consider playing abroad or completely changing sports as negotiations for a new contract with Northampton club are dragging on.
According to available information, Pollock's current contract is valued at £150,000 per year (equivalent to $203,000), and it expires at the end of the 2026/27 season. Earlier this year, the 21-year-old athlete signed an agreement with Matchroom Talent Agency, owned by boxing entrepreneur Eddie Hearn, who then called the backline player a 'seven-figure level player.'
Pollock confirmed that rugby remains his main priority at the moment, but he is open to significant changes in the future. He told reporters: 'I definitely want to go live in other countries, explore new sports, learn about new opportunities.'
He added that Eddie's team and Matchroom constantly contact him regarding various directions, and they are very helpful in such matters. Pollock emphasized that he will not refuse any opportunity. Nevertheless, he noted that he is focused on rugby in the near future, but unexpected events must always be considered.
The 13-time international player insisted that Hearn's valuation of over £1 million did not create additional pressure for him, and believes that his influence can be what rugby needs. He stated: 'I don't see it as pressure. I see it as doing his job. He is the best sports promoter in the world. The reason he is the best is that he gives his client what they deserve.'
Pollock also expressed the opinion that the sport of rugby itself needs changes, and hopes that this will be the kind of change. A move to France or Japan could offer Pollock a higher salary, but he would lose the prestige and commercial advantages of playing for England.
Despite this, Pollock noted how important the Northampton club is to him: 'Northampton has been so good to me; I have spent my entire career here, and they made me who I am. It would be very special for me to stay here.'
He acknowledged the complexity of the situation, saying: 'Obviously, I know it's not that simple, and I know many moving parts are involved. I am very open to new opportunities and ready to explore them. Since I am still young, I think it is right to evaluate these options and find the best solution for myself.'
Northampton's rugby director, Phil Dowson, expressed confidence that an agreement is possible. Dowson noted that the situation is complex because 'there are several moving parts we need to put together,' but he remains hopeful since Pollock wants to stay, and the club intends to retain him.
