In the study of Vastu Shastra, the broom is viewed not merely as a cleaning tool but also as a symbol of the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. According to ancient beliefs, a home where the broom is respected and kept in the proper place always experiences prosperity, peace, and flourishing. Conversely, if the broom is placed in the wrong direction or an unsuitable location, it can cause a serious Vastu defect, leading to stagnation of wealth and financial difficulties.
There are several places in the house where the broom must strictly not be kept. For instance, keeping it in Ishan Kon (the northeast sector), which is considered the abode of deities and positive energy, disrupts domestic tranquility and may provoke economic problems.
It is also forbidden to keep the broom in the kitchen, as Annapurna resides there; its presence can lead to health issues and food scarcity. Placing the broom in the bedroom (Shayyakaksha) or under the bed causes tension and disagreements between spouses. Furthermore, it is extremely inauspicious to keep the broom near a place of worship or a temple, as this halts the inflow of prosperity.
Another taboo is never placing the broom directly in front of the main entrance of the house so that passersby's gaze does not fall upon it directly, which hinders the arrival of Lakshmi and positive energy. It is also forbidden to keep the broom near a safe or a cabinet where money and valuables are stored, as this encourages the waste of funds.
Correct Direction and Rules for Storing a Broom
According to Vastu principles, the most favorable direction for placing a broom is south or southwest. The broom should always be hidden in such a place that it is not visible to guests or family members. It is important to remember that the broom must always be placed on the floor, not held vertically, because a standing broom brings loss of money and poverty into the home.
Other Important Rules Related to the Broom
One must not step on or walk over the broom, as this is regarded as disrespect to Lakshmi. Using a broken or very old broom also creates a Vastu defect. Moreover, cleaning or taking out trash after sunset is considered undesirable, as this can cause Lakshmi to leave the house. The best time to replace an old broom is considered to be Saturday or the day of Amavasya.
