The past year has brought numerous difficulties for Oracle employees. Even before receiving official layoff notifications, they often received warning signs, such as sudden VPN access shutdowns, Slack account deactivations, and receiving emails from company management around six in the morning. These signs were mentioned in a Business Insider report. Oracle has now resumed large-scale layoffs, and employees working in India are closely watching to see if this reorganization might affect their country. Concern is growing among workers regarding this matter.
According to a report published earlier this month, it was suggested that around 3,000 jobs in India could be affected by Oracle's restructuring and increased spending on new skills and technologies. However, Oracle has not officially confirmed this figure. The company has launched a new wave of layoffs in the US as it invests billions of dollars in artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and data center infrastructure.
Although the company has not publicly disclosed the exact number of laid-off employees, staff reports and online predictions point to the possibility of thousands of positions being eliminated. The main worry for India is the future: following the layoffs in the US on September 14th, a hypothesis emerged during employee discussions about a possible next round of layoffs at the Oracle India Development Center (IDC).
In fact, this concern did not arise suddenly. A previous report stated that Oracle's global reorganization could affect the company's employees in India. Furthermore, it was predicted at the time that around 7,000–10,000 jobs worldwide might be impacted, although Oracle did not confirm these figures. Following the recent layoffs in the US, anxiety among Indian employees has intensified as they fear the company might begin the next phase of cuts specifically in India.
Layoffs in India have occurred previously. Several months after the Oracle reorganization in India, uncertainty among employees rose again. Various reports concerning the March-April layoffs circulated different estimates of the impact on India. Some sources claimed that up to 12,000 jobs in India could be affected, although independent confirmation of this figure was not obtained. Other reports indicated a significantly smaller number of affected employees. According to these reports, previous layoffs affected Oracle development centers in India. Job cuts were reported in areas related to Oracle Fusion Cloud Applications and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), as well as in departments such as engineering, data center operations, AI/ML, and customer support.
As of now, there is no answer to whether India will face a wave of layoffs. The layoffs that occurred in the US on September 14th indicate ongoing reorganization at Oracle, but there is no official confirmation yet that India will enter this final stage, nor has the company disclosed how many Indian employees might be affected.
