The MP from Ghatkopar East, Parag Shah, decided, at the direction of his guru, to forgo his fame, position, and wealth for one day to personally experience life in poverty. His spiritual mentor, Rashtras Tant Pujya Namramuni Maharaj, inspired him to undertake this experience, which became a serious test for him.
The teacher advised that a person sometimes needs to step outside their identity and privileges to understand the life of the segment of society that lives in daily need. Parag Shah did not limit himself to merely listening to this advice; he decided to embody it in his life.
Usually, the MP is accompanied by security guards, cars, and an entourage. But on this day, the picture was completely different. Parag Shah left behind his security and political persona. He prepared himself using makeup to look like an extremely poor and helpless person, and his clothing matched this image so that passersby could not guess his true identity. After this, he went out onto the same streets of Ghatkopar where he is usually recognized as a representative of the people.
That day, he had neither a mobile phone, nor a folder of documents, nor any insignia of an MP. In his hands, he held only a bowl, hoping for help from people. Standing on the roadside, he asked pedestrians for assistance. Many walked past, some ignored him, while others gave money or food to the best of their ability. This experience was unique for a representative of the people, as usually people came to him with problems, whereas that day he himself stood before people, dependent on their decision whether or not to give him anything.
It is reported that during this multi-hour experience, no one recognized him as MP Parag Shah.
When evening arrived, the experiment concluded. Parag Shah removed his makeup and returned to his true appearance. However, after this experience, he decided to meet again the people who had helped him several hours earlier in the guise of a beggar. He visited the vendors and ordinary residents who had assisted him. This time, the same person stood before them, but with a completely different persona. He informed the people that the one they had taken for a needy person was actually MP Parag Shah from Ghatkopar East. He also expressed gratitude to those who had helped him without any expectation or recognition.
