Samsung invests in Dutch startup to develop alternative to Nvidia's AI chips

Samsung has made an investment in a Dutch startup specializing in artificial intelligence (AI) chips, aiming to create a competing option to the Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) manufactured by Nvidia. Euclyd raised $231 million (equivalent to R$ 1.2 billion) in a funding round, amid growing capital injection into alternative technologies for AI processing.

Bernardo Kastrup, CEO of Euclyd, stated that the Series A round, totaling 200 million euros, was jointly led by Samsung, Somerset Capital Partners, Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, and Innovation Industries.

Kastrup emphasized that AI is consolidating as a pillar for economic development, scientific discoveries, and national competitiveness, but its potential remains limited until the underlying infrastructure is fundamentally transformed.

Although the systems developed by Euclyd have not yet been validated in large-scale commercial implementations, the startup claims that its silicon systems intended for foundational models can reduce both the costs and energy demand of AI-focused data center infrastructure, a sector attracting significant investments.

The company's strategy will unfold in two directions. Firstly, there will be the commercialization of physical hardware and rack systems for corporations seeking to perform internal and secure AI inference. Secondly, Euclyd plans to license its intellectual property to other companies interested in producing their own chips using the already developed technology.

For Kastrup, the collaboration with Samsung goes beyond mere capital provision. He mentioned that Samsung can assist in various ways, given that it is one of the largest global memory manufacturers, possessing vast experience in engineering, system knowledge, and a wide supply network.

Euclyd forecasts starting the distribution of its physical chip systems in 2028, expecting to serve thousands of business clients by 2030.
