OpenAI acquired Glass Imaging, an AI camera startup, for mobile devices

OpenAI quietly acquired the startup Glass Imaging in recent months. This company specializes in developing technologies aimed at improving smartphone camera quality. According to sources informed to The Wall Street Journal, the transaction was valued at over $300 million, which is equivalent to about 1.6 billion reais.

Previously, Glass Imaging was valued at approximately $100 million (about 530 million reais) during a funding round last year. The startup was founded in 2019 by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop.

The technology developed by Glass Imaging integrates hardware and software with artificial intelligence (AI), allowing for the production of images comparable in quality to a DSLR camera. The two founders, Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, have prior experience at Apple, where they worked on developing camera features, such as the iPhone Portrait mode.

Although OpenAI's specific plans for Glass Imaging have not yet been disclosed, this acquisition occurs parallel to the company's work on developing a consumer product in collaboration with Jony Ive, former Apple executive. OpenAI hired Ive in 2025 as part of the acquisition of his startup io Products, in a deal worth $6.5 billion (approximately 34.5 billion reais).

Jony Ive has taken on roles in the development of consumer devices and in other projects focused on defining the aesthetics and interaction methods of OpenAI's future AI products. Recently, the company also made other purchases, including the TBPN technology interview program and a startup focused on open-source code development tools.

The deal with Glass Imaging strengthens OpenAI's presence in a crucial area for AI devices: cameras capable of capturing real-world environmental data and converting it into information usable by AI systems. The company has not yet specified how it intends to apply the startup's technology or whether it will be integrated into the device being created with Jony Ive. OpenAI is intensifying its collaboration with Samsung with the goal of creating next-generation artificial intelligence chips. This initiative is part of the developer of ChatGPT's plans to produce its own semiconductors and strengthen the partnership with the large South Korean corporation.

Harrison Kim, OpenAI's general manager in South Korea, confirmed the progress of this cooperation during a press conference held in Seoul. He emphasized that the need for memory chips will continue to increase, driven by the demand for increasingly fast and sophisticated AI processing.

The collaboration covers both the research and joint production of these new components. Although Kim did not detail the chip specifications or clarify Samsung's exact role in manufacturing, he mentioned that the joint research and production of next-generation chips is an area where significant advancement and recognition have occurred with Samsung Electronics.

This move comes as OpenAI expands its presence in hardware development. In June, the company launched Jalapeno, its first custom AI chip, created in partnership with Broadcom and focused on inference tasks. The manufacturing of this component will be carried out by TSMC, located in Taiwan.

The relationship with the South Korean industry also extends to memory chips. Last year, Samsung and SK Hynix signed letters of intent to supply these components to Stargate, OpenAI's data center project. For Kim, the increase in AI processing capacity should sustain the demand for more advanced memories, making cooperation with South Korean semiconductor suppliers a priority for OpenAI's local operation.

Beyond hardware, the partnership includes software. Harrison Kim stated that Samsung Electronics is considered one of the largest implementers of ChatGPT globally. Company collaborators, both in South Korea and internationally, use the tool in their research, development, marketing, and sales activities.

Samsung also allowed employees of the Device and Experience division, responsible for products such as mobile phones, televisions, and home appliances, to use ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude internally. The South Korean corporate market has shown significant growth in the use of artificial intelligence; OpenAI reported that the number of ChatGPT Enterprise users in companies and institutions in the country increased approximately 28 times by the end of August compared to the previous year.

Although OpenAI has not disclosed the exact number of users, the company indicated that South Korea had the largest volume of paid ChatGPT subscribers outside the United States at the end of last year. It is expected that this adoption will accelerate after the launch of GPT-6 Astra, scheduled for September 4th, a model that promises improvements in areas such as computing, professional work, science, programming, and cybersecurity.
