Water purifiers installed in homes provide a daily supply of clean and healthy water. However, with constant use, dirt, bacteria, and green mold begin to accumulate in the water storage tanks and filters. This mold not only worsens the taste and smell of the water but can also contaminate it, causing digestive problems.
Furthermore, dirt buildup in the filters increases the load on the reverse osmosis (RO) system, leading to its premature failure. To keep your water purifier in like-new condition and receive clean water for many years, it is crucial to regularly clean its filters and tank.
Necessary Cleaning Supplies
For cleaning, you will need the following items: one cup of white vinegar or lemon juice, two tablespoons of baking soda, warm water, a clean sponge or soft brush, and dish soap.
Cleaning Procedure
Before starting the cleaning process, you must switch off the main power switch of the RO system and completely turn off the water supply tap. Then, open the RO tap to drain all the water accumulated in the storage tank.
Next, open the top cover of the RO system. Mix one cup of vinegar and two tablespoons of baking soda to prepare a paste. Apply this paste to the walls of the tank where mold and yellow stains have formed, using a sponge. Leave the paste on for ten minutes, then thoroughly wipe the surface with a soft sponge.
For disinfection, fill the tank with warm water, adding half a cup of vinegar, and leave it for fifteen minutes to destroy all bacteria and eliminate odors. After this, completely drain the water from the tank.
The next step is to clean the transparent pre-filter housing located outside the RO system. Open this housing, remove the cartridge/filter, and rinse it under clean warm water, removing settled dirt. If the filter looks too dark or old, it should be replaced.
After all components have been reassembled, turn on the water supply and let all the water from the filled tank run out for the first time. The water in the second tank after this will be absolutely clean and safe to drink.
