Formula 1 has confirmed its return to Portugal for two consecutive seasons, in 2027 and 2028, after a six-year absence. The Algarve International Circuit, located in Portimão, will host the Portuguese Grand Prix in these two years, and the official event page has already made a waiting list available for ticket pre-sale.
This two-season agreement was formalized on December 16, 2025, and involves the Portuguese government, Turismo de Portugal, and Parkalgar, the company responsible for circuit management. This race will replace the Dutch GP, which will be removed from the calendar after 2026.
Opened in 2008, the Algarve circuit spans 4.653 km and features 15 corners. It is notable for its altitude variations and blind corners, characteristics that led drivers and teams to compare its layout to a roller coaster during the 2020 and 2021 editions, when the pandemic forced the category to relocate the calendar.
Lewis Hamilton achieved victories in both races held in Portimão. In October 2020, his victory in Portimão represented the British driver's 92nd win in F1, surpassing the record set by Michael Schumacher. He remains the only current driver to have won at Algarve.
The link between the country and the motorsport category is historic. The first Portuguese Grand Prix took place in 1958 at the urban Boavista circuit in Porto, followed by Monsanto in Lisbon in 1959, and again by Boavista in 1960. Subsequently, from 1984 to 1996, the race was held at the Estoril Circuit in Cascais.
It was at Estoril that Ayrton Senna achieved his first pole position and his first career victory on April 21, 1985, under intense rain conditions, driving a Lotus. The last regular Portuguese race in the championship took place on September 22, 1996, also at Estoril, as the calendar was suspended the following year due to demands for safety and infrastructure modernization, as well as the difficulty in securing the necessary investment within the deadlines set by the category.
The 2027 and 2028 races will mark the 19th and 20th editions of the Portuguese Grand Prix. Although the exact date has not yet been determined, it is expected that the organization will finalize the season schedule, with the possibility of the race taking over the period of the Dutch GP, which takes place at the end of August.
