According to information disseminated by Radio Sol Mansi, which is affiliated with the Catholic Church and based on reports from the relatives of the inmates, more than thirty convicts at the Bafata prison center have announced a hunger strike.
The hunger strike was allegedly initiated due to a shortage of prison service staff at this center. Six agents who are supposed to provide supervision are currently on leave to attend courses in Bissau.
Sources also reported that the institution's director ordered no replacement for the absent employees. Radio Sol Mansi reports that due to the lack of personnel to ensure surveillance and inmate movement, they inform their relatives that last Sunday they spent over 24 hours in cells without access to the yard.
To draw attention to this situation, more than 30 inmates began a hunger strike today for an indefinite period. They demand the restoration of the ability to regularly go out into the prison yard.
Radio Sol Mansi noted that it has repeatedly attempted to contact responsible officials of the Bafata prison services and the communications office of the Ministry of Justice for clarification on this matter, but no official response has been received so far.
It was also mentioned that the Lusa agency delegation in Guinea-Bissau suspended its operations starting in August 2025 after being expelled by Portuguese media representatives of the government.
