Uzbekistan and South Korea Discuss Development of Tashkent and Urgench Airports

The Minister of Transport of Uzbekistan, Ilhom Makhomov, and the management of Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC) held talks in Seoul on September 12. The discussion focused on the further implementation of projects for the construction of the new Tashkent International Airport and the modernization of the Urgench International Airport.

Discussion of Airport Development Projects

The parties reviewed the progress of two major public-private partnership projects being implemented in Uzbekistan. Regarding the new Tashkent International Airport, the Minister of Transport proposed attracting highly qualified specialists with international experience to develop technical solutions and detailed design.

The issue of completing the creation of a special design company, as well as companies responsible for the operation and maintenance of the airport, within the established deadlines was also discussed.

Issues of Urgench Airport Modernization and Personnel Training

Concerning the Urgench International Airport, the parties examined the possibility of moving to the next practical stage of terminal construction. Special attention was paid to personnel training. Ilhom Makhomov proposed organizing exchange programs, professional development, and training for Uzbek specialists directly at Incheon International Airport before the commissioning of both airports.

It is expected that such training will help form a group of national specialists capable of managing the new airports after their completion. Following the meeting, the parties supported the proposed initiatives and agreed to continue cooperation on these projects sequentially.
