South Africa's healthcare sector is actively transitioning to data-driven diagnostics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for earlier disease detection and reducing the burden on overloaded medical facilities. The World Healthcare Exhibition 2026 will take place in Johannesburg in October, where leaders will gather to discuss responsible AI implementation and patient safety.
The South African healthcare system is transforming into a more predictive, data-based model, utilizing AI-powered diagnostic tools, interoperable electronic health records, and connected medical devices. However, the shift from reactive treatment to timely intervention depends not only on technology; it requires digital solutions that can demonstrate clinical value, safely integrate into care delivery processes, and comply with regulatory requirements.
AI-assisted diagnostic tools are attracting attention due to their potential to accelerate disease discovery, improve workflow efficiency, and expand capabilities in fields such as radiology, pathology, and laboratory medicine. Nevertheless, a successful pilot project alone does not guarantee a product's readiness for routine clinical application.
Medical organizations must evaluate system performance in real-world settings, among representative patient groups, and in conjunction with existing equipment and within the workflows of clinicians responsible for patient care.
This is particularly critical for diagnostic applications. While algorithmic accuracy is important, it does not cover all clinical aspects. Healthcare systems must also analyze the frequency of false positive and false negative results, the stability of metrics across different patient groups and institutions, the ability of doctors to identify or challenge erroneous results, and the implications of algorithm updates or exposure to unfamiliar data.
The commercial opportunity is becoming increasingly tangible. According to Grand View Research’s Horizon Databook, the South African connected healthcare ecosystem, valued at $47 million in 2025, is projected to grow to $77.4 million by 2033. This trend indicates that connected care is moving from an early innovation stage to an established commercial market.
This also raises more pressing issues regarding compliance. The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) has confirmed that medical devices with AI and machine learning functions, including autonomous software and software integrated into hardware, fall under the scope of South African medical device regulation. Suppliers must determine the correct regulatory pathway and obtain necessary approval before bringing relevant devices to market or using them in South Africa.
Due diligence for healthcare systems procurement must go beyond vendor technical claims. Decision-makers require clarity on the intended use of the technology, risk classification, clinical evidence, local relevance, known limitations, data governance safeguards, cybersecurity measures, and post-implementation performance monitoring plans.
These issues will be central at the World Healthcare Exhibition (WHX) 2026 in Johannesburg—formerly known as Africa Health—which will take place at the Gallagher Convention Centre from October 6 to 8. Returning to Johannesburg after two events in Cape Town, WHX brings together healthcare providers, laboratory and diagnostic specialists, technology partners, policymakers, investors, distributors, and regulatory stakeholders from South Africa, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and international markets.
In addition to the exhibition, WHX will host three specialized Indabas focusing on operational, clinical, and commercial aspects shaping the future of African healthcare. The Healthcare Excellence Indaba, on October 6, will provide a platform for senior healthcare executives and decision-makers to explore strategies for building resilient and future-ready healthcare systems. The program will cover hospital infrastructure modernization, global health priorities, ethical decision-making, and how digital transformation, including the responsible adoption of data-driven technologies, can support the development of smarter hospitals.
