iPhone price increases from Apple in South Africa differ from the American market

The price increases for Apple's iPhone devices in South Africa show different trends compared to the US market. For instance, buyers of the basic iPhone 18 Pro model in South Africa will pay R200 more than the iPhone 17 Pro cost at launch a year earlier, despite Apple raising the price of the same model by 9% in the US.

Buyers in South Africa

According to pre-order prices from the Apple retailer iStore, the starting price for the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro model is R28,799, representing only a 0.7% increase. The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts from R31,299, which matches the price of its predecessor in September 2025. With 512GB storage, both models became cheaper than last year's counterparts: the Pro decreased by 1.2% to R33,599, and the Pro Max decreased by 2.2% to R35,999. Another Apple retailer, Digicape, published similar pre-order prices.

The reason for this discrepancy is the relatively strong Rand currency. Apple increased the starting price of the Pro in the US from US$1,099 to $1,199, and the Pro Max from $1,199 to $1,299, corresponding to an increase of 9.1% and 8.3% respectively. However, over the same 12 months, the Rand strengthened by approximately 7.7% against the dollar, trading around R16.04 in early September versus R17.37 at the time of the iPhone 17 launch. These two factors almost completely offset each other.

However, the situation changes with higher storage capacities. The 1TB iPhone 18 Pro model costs R43,299, which is 9.6% higher than last year's price, and the Pro Max is R45,699, which is 8.8% more expensive. The 2TB Pro Max model increased from R52,499 to R59,999, representing an increase of 14.3% and R7,500 in monetary terms. Furthermore, Apple added the 2TB option for the smaller Pro model for the first time at a price of R57,699.

A consistent pattern is observed: the larger the storage capacity a buyer desires, the worse the comparison becomes with the previous year. Apple has raised prices on its storage tiers, and the strengthening of the Rand only partially mitigates this increase.

Nevertheless, South African buyers are in a better position than American consumers in the premium segment. In the US, the price for the 2TB Pro Max increased from $1,999 to $2,499, which is an increase of 25%.

The comparison is complicated by two structural changes. Apple did not announce the standard iPhone 18 at its September event; it is expected that the base model and 18e will only appear in the first half of 2027. Thus, the current lineup includes only Pro models, along with the foldable iPhone Duo, for which prices in South Africa are currently unknown. It should also be noted that the 2TB option for the iPhone 17 existed only on the Pro Max, so the smaller Pro model has no direct predecessor with such capacity.

Both new models are equipped with the A20 Pro chip, which is the first chip created by Apple on the 2nm process. The rise in the cost of memory and storage components is observed across the industry this year, which is the most obvious explanation for why Apple sets a higher price for capacity while keeping initial prices relatively stable.

Apple raised prices for older iPhone models after the presentation of new devices

Apple held a major event on Wednesday night, presenting the iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro series. This marked the first time the company increased the price of previous iPhone models following its presentation event.

For example, the iPhone 17, which was released last year for 82,900 rupees, is now selling for 99,900 rupees. Additionally, prices for the iPhone 17e and iPhone Air have been raised.

Although the iPhone 18 has not been officially announced, the price of the iPhone 17 was increased by 22 percent. This price hike could be a serious blow to many iPhone enthusiasts. Specifically, the 512 GB version of the iPhone 17 now costs 124,900 rupees.

The price of the iPhone 17e increased by 15,000 rupees: the initial cost was 64,900 rupees, and it is now 79,900 rupees. The iPhone 16 model is now available for 89,900 rupees, whereas the iPhone 15 previously cost 69,900 rupees.

The iPhone Air, Apple's thinnest device, saw a price increase of 30,000 rupees. Its cost rose from the previous 119,900 rupees to 149,900 rupees.

Regarding the new models, the starting price for the iPhone 17 Pro series is set at 134,900 rupees, and the starting price for the new iPhone 18 Pro is 164,900 rupees. The initial price for the iPhone 17 Pro Max was 149,900 rupees, and for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, it has been set at 179,900 rupees.

The iPhone 17 features a 6.3-inch LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED display that supports a 120Hz refresh rate. The device uses the built-in A19 chipset (3 nm) for operation.

The iPhone 17 camera is equipped with a dual rear camera system: the main sensor has a resolution of 48 megapixels, and the secondary one also has 48 megapixels. It also includes an 18 MP front camera, and the device supports wireless charging.

Expected Cost of Foldable iPhone Duo from Apple in South Africa

Apple introduced a foldable phone called the iPhone Duo on Wednesday, marking the most significant change to the company's flagship product in recent years. The starting price in the US is $1999, which could lead to a cost exceeding 50,000 South African Rand upon launch in South Africa.

TechCentral calculated this estimate based on the non-discounted price of the iPhone 17 Pro Max 2TB model, which was priced at $1999 in the US until this week (this model is no longer sold on the Apple website). According to iStore data, this specific model was recently sold in South Africa for 50,999 Rand, although the Apple retailer is currently clearing stock ahead of the release of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models.

The mentioned price of over 50,000 Rand applies only to the base model with a modest 256GB storage capacity. In the US, prices can reach $3,199 for the 2TB model. If such a model is introduced in South Africa, its cost could exceed 80,000 Rand, which would be equivalent to the price of a top-tier MacBook Pro model.

Similar to the recently announced Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, the Duo has a passport-like shape with rounded edges. It unfolds into a wide horizontal screen that can also be viewed vertically. When folded, a smaller single screen is located on the front panel. The company stated that in its open state, it is Apple's thinnest phone.

This presentation event for the foldable phone, held for the first time under the leadership of new CEO John Ternus, is the most notable update to Apple's flagship product since the removal of the physical Home button from the iPhone X in 2017. The iPhone generated $209.6 billion, or slightly more than half of Apple's sales in the last fiscal year.

Former CEO Tim Cook handed over leadership to Ternus in a video message that concluded with a close-up of Cook saying, 'Not me. It's your guy,' pointing to Ternus.

Personal AI Hub

Ternus presented the iPhone as a privacy-focused personal artificial intelligence hub, noting that other companies aim to collect and store personal data. He stated, 'Frankly, trust has its limits when your data no longer belongs to you.' He added, 'That's why Apple Intelligence works on the device whenever possible.'

Lilia Rinkon from Apple, who oversees AI products for the iPhone manufacturer and was hired from Google earlier this year, described the updated Siri assistant, which will support 300,000 apps at launch.

Executives also demonstrated the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max models, which are the latest versions of Apple's established lineup but do not fold. Prices for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max start at $1,199 and $1,299 respectively, which is $100 higher than the starting prices of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max.

Apple also introduced a feature aimed at addressing growing concerns about AI-generated and modified images. A new standard called 'Apple Reference Image' was introduced to verify the authenticity of photos taken with the new iPhone 18 Pro cameras, and it was stated that it will also support the evolving SynthID standard for identifying AI-generated or edited images. The Apple Reference Image feature will not be available in the EU or China.

The iPhone 18 Pro will also be equipped with the new A20 Pro chip, which provides enhancements to support advanced AI models directly on the iPhone.

Paolo Pescatore, an analyst at PP Foresight, noted, 'Apple Intelligence and Siri are the focus. Apple is leveraging its biggest advantage—a massive hardware base—to make AI an integral part of the daily experience across all devices.'

During the presentation, Apple's stock dropped by approximately 1%. The company also announced that the new version of AirPods will start at $129 with noise cancellation, which is the first for the budget headphone line, and the $149 version will be available with additional features such as wireless charging and stem volume control, allowing users to adjust the sound by swiping up or down the stem.

Apple also unveiled the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, positioning them as major health-focused updates. This includes a redesigned sensor system that measures heart rate more frequently than before and powers new features assessing recovery and fitness. The company stated that the watches use Apple's new silicon and improved sensors to provide what it calls the most accurate heart rate tracking among wearables.

Previously, Ternus held the position of Apple hardware head but maintained a low public profile, aside from a few product presentations and sustainability initiatives. Now, Ternus faces the task of convincing Apple customers to purchase a $2000 foldable device, a new high point for the global brand that defined mass luxury.

Although Samsung Electronics and Huawei Technologies have been selling foldable phones since 2019, these devices remain niche among tech enthusiasts. However, even at a high price point, analytical firms like International Data Corporation expect Apple to sell every foldable iPhone it produces and capture 40% of the profitable niche by the end of next year.
