Proteas captain Bjorn Fortuin demonstrated outstanding play on Sunday. During this tour in Namibia, he faced direct criticism from Proteas coach Shukri Conrad.
After losing the T20I three-match series to the host team, Conrad used sharp remarks in the dressing room with the captain and other players. This conversation had the desired effect, as Proteas did not lose a single game in the white-ball series afterward.
However, on Sunday, Fortuin drew particular attention when the left-arm spinner's start did not meet expectations. Conrad intervened again, and Fortuin responded again, finishing the match with his best ODI figures in his career—4/33, which allowed Proteas to defeat Namibia by 156 runs.
Bjorn Fortuin stated: 'Yes, I felt like I played quite well today. It took some time to get going, and I needed a little sharp comment from the coach from the boundary to get myself into gear and focused. I am pleased that there was something to work on, and I feel I achieved some improvements in that regard, so that is another positive point, but ultimately, none of this matters if it doesn't lead to a win, so that is the most important thing.'
This match concluded the tour, as Proteas secured a clean sweep in the ODI series with a score of 3-0. Fortuin also noted that for the Namibian players who are set to face Australia next month, training against Proteas' neighbors from Southern Africa would be beneficial before the first ODI in Kingsmead on September 24th.
He added: 'The most important thing for us as a group before starting the big home season is time on the field. Most of our best learning happens there, on the field as cricketers. We can only learn a limited number of things in training and sessions, but that is where everything matters, and continuing to learn and perform at such a level simultaneously is the most enjoyable. Confidence is key. I am very happy for the guys heading into the Australian series with this level of form and confidence.'
