Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz admitted that his team is unnecessarily complicating matters because goalkeeper Brandon Petersen made another costly mistake.
This error led to a goal for Polokwane City in a tense draw during the Betway Premiership match, which was held at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. This recent blunder is yet another worrying sign in a series of errors committed by the Chiefs captain this season.
This is Petersen's fourth costly mistake this season that resulted in a scored goal, increasing pressure on the experienced goalkeeper and the Chiefs' defensive structure.
Match Analysis
Da Cruz was particularly displeased because Chiefs expected threats from Polokwane through crosses and corners, and Petersen had previously made crucial saves, helping the team stay in the game. After the match, Da Cruz told the media: "Of course, it is very disappointing because we made changes after Brandon made those big saves in the first half; we knew they were strong in crosses and corners, but when we concede such a goal, we must be disappointed."
The coach's frustration also reflects a broader issue he raised immediately after the game on SuperSport TV. Da Cruz believes that Chiefs are increasingly giving away scoring opportunities to opponents instead of allowing them to create them. Such mistakes cost them victories against Richards Bay and Siwelele.
He noted: "It is very easy to analyze: before, we did not make mistakes, we did not give opponents chances to score. But now, starting with Richards Bay, then Siwelele, and today Polokwane City, the opponent does not create chances, but we make big mistakes and give the opponents the opportunity to score goals."
Petersen's latest error came at an inopportune moment, considering Da Cruz has repeatedly stressed the need to reduce individual slip-ups. Since the goalkeeper also holds captaincy duties, his form is an even more important issue for Chiefs as they strive for stability under the French coach.
Nevertheless, Da Cruz insists that the problem is not limited to the goalkeeper. The coach also believes that Chiefs must be more decisive when opportunities arise on the opposite end of the field. He added: "We should not doubt ourselves because we are doing good things, but we lack sufficient killing instinct in both our penalty area and the opponent's penalty area."
Despite another missed opportunity, Da Cruz is convinced that Chiefs are moving in the right direction. "But we are also doing good things, so we need to keep believing in ourselves because we are going down a good (right) path."
However, for Chiefs, this belief must be accompanied by increased concentration. While Da Cruz continues to point out positive aspects of his team's performance, recurring individual shortcomings, especially those leading to goals, hinder the transformation of promising performances into victories.
