The internet has become an integral part of life today, necessary for studying, working, and video calls. However, there are still areas in the country where mobile or fiber optic internet is difficult to reach. In this regard, the company Jio is preparing to provide internet access to these hard-to-reach places.
According to the report, Jio plans to launch about 1600 satellites into low Earth orbit (LEO). These satellites will orbit at an altitude of approximately 650 kilometers above Earth, through which Jio intends to start providing satellite internet services.
Simply put, this will allow internet delivery to places where installing cell towers or laying cables is a difficult task. This model is also used by other companies, such as Starlink.
The main advantage of Jio's plan is the ability to cover remote corners of the country. With satellites, broadband internet access can be provided in villages, mountainous regions, and areas with low internet connectivity.
Thus, to ensure access to the entire internet, it will not be necessary to lay terrestrial networks of towers and fiber-optic lines; satellites will directly help in providing connectivity.
According to the report, Jio may begin test flights with some satellites in 2027. A large-scale satellite launch is planned for early 2028. The company aims to prepare a network of approximately 400–500 satellites by 2030 and complete the 1600-satellite network by 2035.
Jio will compete with companies such as Starlink and Amazon Leo. Starlink satellites are at an altitude of about 550 kilometers, whereas the Jio network will operate at an altitude of about 650 kilometers, making the future competition in the satellite internet sector in India very interesting.
