During the second day of the BRICS summit, leaders will gather to discuss key areas such as resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability. India is hosting the annual group summit, utilizing its rotating presidency for 2026.
An open session titled 'Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability: Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth' will take place in the Summit Hall within the 'Bharat Mandapam' in New Delhi. This session is part of the two-day BRICS summit, which India is holding on September 12–13 under the overarching theme of 'Building Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability.'
The meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for BRICS leaders to discuss areas of mutual interest and outline ways to strengthen interaction among member states while promoting an inclusive approach to global development.
Earlier, on Saturday, BRICS leaders unanimously adopted the New Delhi Declaration 2026. Prime Minister Narendra Modi characterized this document as reflecting a BRICS that is 'broader in scope and stronger in purpose.'
In a series of posts on X, Prime Minister Modi noted that the declaration focuses on innovation, sustainable development, and people-to-people connections, aiming to make cooperation 'more practical, development-oriented, and responsive to the aspirations of BRICS countries.' He thanked all BRICS nations and leaders for adopting the document.
The presidency, which began on January 1, 2026, is guided by the theme 'Building Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability,' applying a human-centric approach to all its core pillars to enhance institutional strength and support sustainable growth.
Supporting Resilience
Under the principle of resilience, the presidency aims to strengthen economic, social, and institutional foundations, ensuring that member states are better prepared to confront global uncertainties, supply chain disruptions, healthcare crises, and climate threats by creating robust and adaptive systems that foster inclusive progress.
Innovative Approach
The innovation principle focuses on leveraging new technologies, including artificial intelligence, digital public infrastructure, and fintech, to improve service delivery, stimulate future-ready economic growth, and promote knowledge sharing and technological cooperation within the bloc.
Cooperation
Through the pillar of cooperation, India intends to deepen ties among members by improving policy alignment, developing financial assistance, facilitating trade, and jointly participating in multilateral governance reforms, placing practical, people-oriented interactions and partnerships at the center of the group's expanding scope.
Environmental Sustainability
Meanwhile, the principle of sustainable development encourages collective action on climate change mitigation, green finance, energy transition, and sustainable development, while respecting individual national development priorities. These issues are integrated into the core of dialogues at various ministerial and working levels throughout the presidency.
The group has evolved into a vital platform for diplomatic and political coordination among major emerging markets and developing economies. It currently comprises 11 full members: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
Furthermore, a partner country structure has been introduced, encompassing 10 nations: Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
Collectively, this expanded alliance holds significant demographic and economic influence, representing approximately 49.5 percent of the world's population, 40 percent of global GDP, and 26 percent of international trade.
Continuing this tradition, India's 2026 presidency integrates achieved reform goals with expanded priorities, placing resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability at the heart of the bloc's collective agenda. As leaders convene in New Delhi on the second day of the summit, discussions are expected to further shape the group's priorities and assess its evolving role in global governance, economic cooperation, and sustainable development. The summit will also offer member states an opportunity to strengthen coordination on issues affecting developing countries and chart the future path for the expanding BRICS group.
