China presented a list of leading global scientific and technological publications during the opening of the Puyang Innovation Forum in Shanghai on Saturday, 2026.
The list for 2025 covers 6,132 journals from 55 countries and regions, published in 23 languages. Among them are 353 Chinese journals.
The compilation of this list was carried out by the China Institute of Scientific and Technical Information in collaboration with other relevant research institutions. The basis for the evaluation was the global database of scientific citations and a special assessment system for world-renowned scientific and technical journals.
According to the 2025 list, the USA and the United Kingdom ranked first and second among the top ten countries, with 1,845 and 1,815 journals, respectively. Following them are the Netherlands, Germany, China, Switzerland, Japan, France, South Korea, and Singapore, occupying positions from third to tenth.
The ten most common languages in these journals include English, French, German, Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Polish.
Regarding the history of the journals' creation, 384 publications are over one hundred years old, 1,360 were founded 50–100 years ago, 1,871—30–50 years ago, 2,266—10–30 years ago, and 251 journals were launched within the last decade.
Among the countries that have published the largest number of globally recognized scientific and technical journals in the last decade, China topped the ranking with 83 journals. It is followed by the USA with 67, the UK with 56, the Netherlands with 14, and Switzerland with 9.
The release of this list serves as a tool to ensure a fair and impartial standard for evaluating scientific and technical journals from different countries and in various languages. This provides equal opportunities for assessing journals from developing countries and newly established publications.
