In Tehran, Iranian athletes Faizeh Ahmadi and Nasrin Shahih Samakhun won the gold and silver medals, respectively, at the World Para Shooting Championship held on Saturday.
The Iranian women demonstrated outstanding performance, securing the country's first gold medal at the 2026 Changwon World Championships.
Ahmadi, the current Asian Para Games champion, showed exceptional consistency to win her first World Championship title and a quota spot for the country at LA28. She won in the P2 - 10m air pistol women SH1 discipline, scoring 238.3 points.
After Ahmadi fired her last shot and secured the victory, emotions swept over the audience, surpassing her compatriot Nasrin Shahih Samakhun, a former World Champion from Changwon, who finished with a score of 233.7 points.
Indian athlete Bhakti Sharma, aged 20, prevented Iran from achieving complete dominance by taking the bronze medal after an impressive performance with a score of 213.1. Three-time Paralympic champion Sareh Javanmardi took fourth place with a score of 194.1.
Previously, the Iranian trio—Ahmadi, Samakhun, and Javanmardi—also set a world record in qualification, collectively scoring 1707-44x, which allowed them to win the team gold.
A total of 324 athletes from 53 countries are participating in the WSPS World Championships from September 10 to 15 in Korea, striving to win world titles and quotas for LA28.
