After setbacks in JEE and rejection from IIT, Arjun Jain became a professor after 14 years

In 2001, Arjun Jain arrived at the JEE exam in his classmate's father's car, accompanied by a security guard. However, he realized that the exam results could not be changed by special privileges, and he noted his experience in a LinkedIn post.

He shared that he was only able to answer a few questions in the examination hall, which immediately showed him a very low level of preparation. For two years, Jain focused all his efforts on preparing for the JEE, giving up hockey, quizzes, and debates. When his JEE performance was unsatisfactory, he planned to continue his preparation in Kota, but his family's financial situation did not allow it. Therefore, he enrolled in computer science studies at RV College of Engineering in Bangalore, and this decision became a turning point in his life.

At RV College, Jain did not limit himself to studying computer science only within his group; he actively sought knowledge outside of the curriculum. He took research papers from IEEE journals and began studying this field independently. After a year, he decided to retake the JEE directly from his hostel room. This time, he achieved a rank of 3363 and secured a spot in IIT. However, a snag arose: he was offered a position in petrochemical engineering at IIT-BHU, which he declined.

The reason for the refusal was that he had already completed a one-year course in computer science and did not want to start over in a field that did not interest him. He decided to finish his degree at RV College. For him, starting over would mean additional time and money spent on studies that would not excite him. Ultimately, this decision moved him away from the IIT he once dreamed of attending.

Jain's journey did not stop there. He obtained a PhD in Computer Science from Saarland University. Following this, he conducted postdoctoral research at the Courant Institute at New York University (NYU). At NYU, he worked on research related to deep learning and human pose recognition. He collaborated with researchers such as Yann LeCun and Chris Bregler. His work was presented at major conferences, including ICLR, NeurIPS, and CVPR.

The results of his research found application in industry, leading to the creation of the company Perceptive Code. Later, Mercedes acquired the intellectual property of this company. After this, Jain's career continued at Apple, where in 2015 he worked as a senior researcher in the Project Titan team, focusing on computer vision and sensor systems for vehicles, including driver and passenger monitoring technologies.

However, an event occurred in 2016 that may have touched him deeply. Approximately 14 years after his first JEE attempt, Jain began working at IIT Bombay as an assistant professor. He felt the irony of fate: he was called by IIT Bombay not for an appointment to any position, but for teaching. Now he was teaching students computer vision, taking an exam in which he himself had failed to succeed.

For many years, Jain taught at IIT Bombay and mentored two postgraduate students. One of these students, Rishab Dabral, later became a professor and group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, where Jain was interning. In his post, Jain noted how striking this similarity was: his student teaches where he studied, and he taught where he could not study. Today, Jain is the founder and chief scientist of Fast Code AI, working in both academia and AI research.

The question of what to study after finishing school and in which field to build a career often causes difficulties for students and their parents. Due to a lack of proper guidance or awareness, children often choose from a limited number of options. To solve this problem and link school education with higher education, the prestigious institute of the country, IIT Madras, has initiated a remarkable program.

The Center for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE) at IIT Madras has expanded the scope of its flagship project, the 'School Connect Program,' by launching 17 new online certification courses for students in grades 9-12.

This program is designed specifically for students in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12. Its main goal is to introduce students to the practical world and modern career opportunities that go beyond the standard curriculum. Thanks to this initiative by IIT Madras, schoolchildren from remote parts of the country will have the opportunity to receive high-quality education at the IIT level.

Students from partner schools can enroll in any of the 17 courses according to their preferences. Available fields include: 'Data Science and AI' (data science and artificial intelligence basics), 'Electronic Systems' (introduction to electronics and equipment), 'Architecture and Design' (basic principles of design and construction), 'Engineering Biological Systems', 'Fun with Math and Computing', 'Introduction to Law' (fundamentals of law), 'Math Unplugged' (studying mathematics through games and puzzles), 'Fundamentals of Aerospace' (space and aviation technologies), 'Introduction to Ecology' (ecology and environment), 'Humanities Unplugged', 'Chemical Engineering', 'Economics, Finance and Money Matters' (finance and economics management), 'Game Tech Explorers' (game technology and human-machine interaction), 'Product Design', 'Molecular Engineering', 'Cyber Security' (lessons in digital world safety), and 'Digital Humanities'.

Students from partner schools register for these courses. In addition to studying, they must complete assignments and take online exams. Students who successfully complete the course and pass the exam will be issued an official 'e-certificate' from IIT Madras.

The IIT Madras network is rapidly expanding: currently, 4920 schools across the country have joined the program, and over 175,270 students have registered to participate.

The application deadline is set for September 30, 2026, and classes are scheduled to begin on October 5, 2026.

The 'School Connect' program gives children the opportunity to understand their true interests—whether it be aerospace, product design, cybersecurity, or finance—many years before entering college, which helps avoid choosing an unsuitable major after graduating from the 12th grade.

IAS Divya Mittal resigns after 13 years of service, holding degrees from IIT and IIM

Divya Mittal received her first education in Delhi. After completing 12th grade, she enrolled in IIT Delhi and completed her B.Tech degree between 2001 and 2005. Subsequently, after passing the CAT exam, she joined IIM Bangalore, where she completed an MBA program in the 2005-07 cohort, ranking in the top 5 percent of her batch.

After obtaining her MBA, Divya Mittal worked in London. However, she later returned to India and began preparing for the UPSC civil services examination. According to available reports, she passed the UPSC exam on her first attempt and secured a position in the IPS service, before being selected for the IAS service with an All India Rank of 68 in her second attempt.

In May 2026, Divya Mittal shared her thoughts on her education and life experiences on social media. She noted that her education at IIT Delhi, IIM Bangalore, and subsequent service in the IAS prepared her to overcome complex challenges and take on great responsibilities. Nevertheless, she emphasized that formal schooling and university education did not teach her how to cope with emotional difficulties and loneliness in life. Following her post in India, a discussion began about the necessity of including life skills and emotional education in the education system.

Announcing her resignation in her social media posts, she reiterated that she is voluntarily ending her 13-year journey in the IAS. She added that despite all her dreams coming true, she lacked a sense of completeness while outside her country. She felt a duty towards this land, as her education, self-confidence, and ability to stand tall in the world were connected to this soil. Therefore, she decided to return to India to contribute to building the India she dreamed of.

She mentioned that she learned many things, and that Devariya taught her that supporting the truth is not a choice but a duty. Mirzapur showed her that 'impossible' is merely an opinion, not a fact. And under the shade of Maa Vindhyavasini, she understood that strength comes not from a position, but from the grace and trust of people. The biggest realization was understanding that she now needed to live for the dreams of other people, not just her own. True peace she found in the eyes of a family that gained land for the first time, in the eyes of a disabled person who was given the opportunity to live with dignity, and in the eyes of a farmer whose field received water.
