Discussions regarding the top-order lineup of the Indian team intensified ahead of the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan. Although 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi strengthened his claim after an impressive performance against Zimbabwe, former Indian player Ajinkya Rahane is not inclined to give him a spot in the top three.
On his YouTube channel, Ajinkya Rahane clearly stated that India should rely on the three players who participated in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, and that there is no need to experiment with the team order right now. In Rahane's opinion, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan should be in the top-3.
Ajinkya Rahane also shared his views on Sanju Samson. He noted that Samson performed well for the team and that it was wrong to exclude him after a few unsuccessful matches. Rahane wishes to give the wicketkeeper-batsman another chance.
Rahane emphasized: 'I believe the top-3 should be those who played in the World Cup.' He added that Samson showed good results, but he was excluded after two or three poor matches, and he wants him to be given another chance. At the same time, he also acknowledged the good performances of Abhishek and Ishan.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi earned two half-centuries in the T20I series against Zimbabwe and became the 'player of the series,' which fueled the debate about his inclusion in the top order. Nevertheless, Ajinkya Rahane believes that Vaibhav still has plenty of time, and one should not rush to replace an established player.
Rahane concluded that while Vaibhav will get his chances and his time will come, currently, in his view, the top-3 should consist of Samson, Abhishek, and Ishan. Vaibhav Suryavanshi debuted internationally against England in July, becoming the youngest player to represent India in international cricket, and is now striving to secure a place in the team. On the other hand, Sanju Samson's return after resting from the Zimbabwe series increased the competition in the top order.
The Indian team squad for the T20I series against Afghanistan includes: Shreyas Iyer (captain), Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper), Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Akshaya Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Yash Thakur.
