However, according to the principles of Vastu Shastra, there are specific rules regarding the placement of plants on the roof. It is crucial to consider the correct location, quantity, and care of the plants, as placing them in accordance with Vastu rules brings prosperity and positive energy into the home, whereas the slightest mistake can cause a Vastu defect.
When designing a rooftop garden, special attention should be paid to direction. To maintain energetic balance in the house, pots must be placed according to specific directions. Before placing a pot, one must assess its orientation, as well as the lighting conditions and available space at that point.
According to Vastu rules, small, light, and flowering plants are best placed on the roof in the east, north, or northeast (Ishaan) direction. This area is considered a source of positive energy and promotes happiness and wealth. The most favorable choices for this side include basil, marigolds, or mint, as well as other medicinal varieties.
If you plan to install large, tall, or heavy pots, the optimal directions will be south or west. Vastu states that placing heavy objects in the south or west ensures stability in the home and helps prevent negative influences.
It is strictly not recommended to place any large or heavy pot exactly in the center of the roof (in the Brahmastan); this area should remain clean and open, which is considered a good sign in Vastu.
It is also advisable to avoid planting thorny plants, such as cacti (except roses), because in Vastu they are associated with tension and negativity. Furthermore, the entire roof should not be overloaded with pots; excessive crowding or a large number of heavy pots is undesirable from a Vastu perspective. Sufficient free space should always be left between the plants.
It is important to immediately remove any dry, damaged, or withered plants from the roof or from the house, as in Vastu they are seen as a symbol of negative energy. Therefore, regular plant care is necessary. When choosing plants for the roof, preference should be given to those that tolerate sunlight well and are easy to care for. Before planting fast-growing or very heavy species, their growth and the permissible load on the roof must be carefully considered.
