The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved an additional 13,186 seats for MBBS training for the academic year 2026-27. This decision raises the total number of approved undergraduate medical seats to 140,214 across 836 medical colleges, excluding seats in Institutes of National Importance (INI).
The additional increase of 13,186 seats will expand the available pool of MBBS seats during the 2026-27 admission campaign; however, the actual allocation of these seats will depend on the ongoing counseling process.
Specifically, Tamil Nadu has 14,299 seats, Uttar Pradesh has 14,400 seats, and Maharashtra has 13,249 seats.
