Volvo has announced a complete restyling of its mid-size SUV range, including the XC40, EX40, and EC40 models. This mid-life update brings a new design, an 11.2-inch multimedia center, and a voice assistant integrated with Google Gemini. The renewal aims to keep the trio competitive until the introduction of future generations. While the vehicles are already available for order in Europe, their arrival in Brazil is expected next year.
The XC40, originally launched in 2017, is the only model that still operates with an internal combustion engine. The EX40 is the electric variant of this SUV, known as the XC40 Recharge until 2025. The EC40, which appeared in 2021 as the C40 Recharge, features a coupe profile and also received a new nomenclature within the brand's standard.
The exterior changes follow Volvo's latest visual language. All models have received redesigned headlights, reinterpreting the Thor's Hammer light signature. For the XC40, the grille has been renewed and features contrasting paint, inspired by the restyled XC90; for the EX40 and EC40, the piece is fully integrated and painted in the body color.
Other visual adjustments include the removal of fog lights and their recesses from the bumper, as well as the redesign of the central air intake. At the rear, the EC40 preserves its coupe shape, while the XC40 and EX40 gain new LED bumpers, tailgate, and taillights. The alloy wheels have also been updated, available in sizes from 18 to 20 inches.
In the interior, the main novelty is the 11.2-inch multimedia screen, which runs on the most updated operating system and allows voice commands processed by Google's artificial intelligence. Volvo has also refined the finishing materials and ambient lighting. The safety package has been enhanced with the addition of a front camera, radars, and updated ultrasonic sensors. According to the manufacturer, the images captured by the panoramic vision cameras now generate a three-dimensional projection to assist with parking maneuvers.
There have been no modifications to the engine. The XC40 continues to be equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Its specifications are 163 hp and 27 kgfm in the B3 configuration, and 197 hp and 30.6 kgfm in the B4, both featuring a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.
The EX40 is offered in P4, P5, and P8 versions, with power ranging from 204 hp to 442 hp. It uses batteries of 69 kWh, 70 kWh, or 82 kWh, and boasts declared ranges between 435 km and 573 km in the WLTP cycle. The EC40 ranges from 238 hp to 442 hp, with battery options of 70 kWh or 82 kWh, achieving distances of 486 km to 583 km, also under the WLTP criteria.
In the Brazilian market, Volvo does not sell the gasoline-powered XC40. Only the electric models are available: the EX40 starts at R$ 329,950 in the Plus version and reaches R$ 379,950 in the Ultra, while the EC40 is priced between R$ 334,950 and R$ 384,950. It is important to note that the autonomy values approved by Inmetro in Brazil are more conservative than those in Europe, registering 393 km for the EX40 Ultra and 404 km for the EC40 Ultra.
