A new rule has come into effect in Ras Al Khaimah prohibiting the use of charcoal and barbecues on the public beach, Flamingo Beach. This measure was adopted to preserve the appearance of the area and enhance public safety. The ban became effective on September 10, 2026.
The Ras Al Khaimah Department of Government Services announced the restriction at Flamingo Beach, urging residents to comply with this rule to maintain the cleanliness, safety, and accessibility of the beach for all visitors. The Department emphasized that this initiative aims to preserve the beauty of the beach and ensure a safe environment for both local residents and regional guests.
This restriction is introduced against the backdrop of the approaching cooler winter months in the UAE, when beach holidays and communal barbecues become a popular activity among families and groups of friends. Although outdoor cooking is a common activity during the cooler period, charcoal and barbecue waste can pose environmental and safety hazards if not disposed of properly. Hot coals after a barbecue can continue to cause burns, creating a particular danger for people walking barefoot on the beach.
Similar restrictions are also in place at other popular recreation spots in the UAE. In Al Ain city, notices have been posted at various parking lots in Jebel Hafeet strictly prohibiting barbecues, and violations incur fines. According to Abu Dhabi Law No. 2 of 2012 on preserving the public appearance, health, and tranquility in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, failure to observe directional, warning, instructional, or prohibitive signs concerning access and use of public areas results in a fine of 1000 dirhams. For repeated violations, the fine increases to 2000 dirhams, and for a third offense, up to 4000 dirhams.
Jebel Hafeet is one of the favorite places for residents and tourists in the UAE and is constantly developing, including dining establishments and family entertainment zones for visitors.
The latest restriction in Ras Al Khaimah is also linked to broader efforts to improve safety on the emirate's beaches. Earlier this year, the Ras Al Khaimah Police conducted a month-long information campaign dedicated to safety measures for beachgoers across the emirate. This campaign was organized by the Department of Media and Public Relations and the Department of Community Protection and Prevention in cooperation with relevant police stations.
Lieutenant Colonel Rashid Belhoun, head of the public policing sector in the Department of Community Protection and Prevention, stated that the campaign was part of the Ras Al Khaimah Police's efforts to protect beachgoers, especially during the summer season when beaches become popular destinations for families and youth. Specialized teams conducted evening patrols on beaches in Shaam, Al Rams, Al Mareed, and Ras Al Khaimah, providing visitors with safety advice. Parents were advised to closely monitor their children and prevent them from entering deeper waters, which could threaten their lives and safety. Visitors to the beaches were also advised to follow the instructions of lifeguards stationed at the emirate's main beaches to help prevent accidents.
