The President of Timor-Leste stated that as the country develops, the development of economic partnership is also necessary. He emphasized that China remains a vital partner within their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
José Ramos-Horta noted that in the first half of 2026 alone, China imported goods worth $72 million (about €62 million), making this statement during China's National Day.
The head of state of Timor-Leste expressed his intention to build economic relations based on mutual benefit and balance. He added that there are plans to increase the export of coffee, agricultural products, and fishery products from Timor-Leste to Chinese markets, noting that the advantages of Chinese tariffs could become a 'transformational path for Timorese enterprises.'
The President welcomed foreign direct investment, mentioning a framework agreement with the Caizi Group for potential investments in the tourism, housing, agriculture, and industry sectors.
In his speech, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate also highlighted China's cooperation with Timor-Leste in the fields of education and vocational training, defense and security, as well as infrastructure.
He stated that although they do not aim to fully replicate China's path, China's success demonstrates that long-term vision and strategic planning can ensure rapid modernization.
Furthermore, the President of Timor-Leste affirmed his commitment to the 'One China' policy, stating: 'We recognize that there is one China, and that the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing all of China, and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory.'
