Genetic analysis of three deceased individuals in Fanagoria showed closeness to Turks

Russian geneticists sequenced the DNA of three individuals whose remains were discovered in Fanagoria during the reign of the Khazar Khanate. These remains belonged to unrelated people who lived approximately a thousand years ago.

The study results showed that compared to modern populations, these individuals were genetically closest to Turkic-speaking groups. Regarding ancient populations, a genetic link was established with the Avars, who inhabited the territory of modern Hungary in the early Middle Ages.

Information about these results is presented in a scientific publication published in the journal 'Vavilov Journal of Genetics and Selection.'
