The architectural bureau MAD, founded by Ma Yangson, has unveiled the Danshuis project—a new dance center planned for Rotterdam, Netherlands. This project is located in a prominent area of the city's historic port district, near the Fenix Museum of Migration, which was also designed by MAD. The center is anticipated to open in 2030.
The 9,500 square meter facility will transform an old Art Deco warehouse built in 1923 on the south bank of the Maas River. Danshuis is envisioned as a hub for the production, development, and practice of various dance styles, aiming to unite professional and amateur programs for different ages and skill levels.
The project includes 14 dance studios, an open stage, a sports hall, an exhibition space, and a café. On the roof, there will be the Salle des Fêtes, intended for large public events with panoramic views of the historic port of Rotterdam. Various floors of the building will be connected by a vertical foyer that integrates the main spaces with the rooftop area. Extensive outdoor relaxation areas along the waterfront are also provided.
The design concept makes movement and public activities central elements in the relationship between the building and its surroundings, ensuring a direct connection between Danshuis and the neighboring Fenix Museum. The project planning is carried out by the Droom en Daad Foundation, based in Rotterdam, which participates in various city cultural initiatives, including the Fenix Museum of Migration, which opened in 2025.
The center will provide venues for dance training, creation, rehearsals, and performances, as well as exhibitions and public events, to gather the local community and international specialists in one location. Ma Yangson, founder and director of MAD, noted: 'Movement goes beyond architecture, becoming part of the district's very identity. The beauty of human movement and the expression of dance will resonate with Fenix, creating a continuous dialogue between them.'
This project complements the established cultural program in the Fenix Museum area by adding a building dedicated entirely to movement and performance to the port zone. Other recently announced projects include the winning concept by Stefano Boeri Architetti for approximately 190 affordable rental units in Ibiza, the AART project for a 1,300 square meter underground expansion at Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen, and the recently presented WOMA complex by MVRDV in North Wynwood, Miami.
