A group of researchers from the University of Maryland in the United States discovered a potential basis for creating more effective antivenoms in viper blood. In laboratory tests, combinations of proteins naturally produced by snakes were found to be approximately ten times more potent than the currently used commercial antivenom against viper venom.
Some species of vipers possess resistance to their own venom, and the team studied the blood proteins responsible for this defense. The study showed that these proteins, when combined, are capable of blocking venom with greater efficiency.
The main focus of the study was on proteins of the FETUA family. Previously, scientists had identified one of them, FETUA-3, and observed its ability to block certain toxins contained in the venom of the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake. However, in the new study, researchers analyzed various proteins from this group. Individually, none of them could completely stop the lethal effects of the venom, but the combinations demonstrated significantly greater protection.
Tests also showed that these mixtures are capable of neutralizing venoms from other viper species, including those from animals that diverged evolutionarily millions of years ago. This could be significant because one venom can contain about 100 different toxic proteins and varies greatly between species.
Future research steps
Despite the findings, the study does not mean that a new antivenom is already available. The experiments were conducted in a laboratory, and at present, the research focus has been primarily on metalloproteinases—one of the families of toxins found in viper venoms. Scientists plan to expand the strategy to other toxins and develop antivenoms manufactured in the lab based on these natural proteins.
According to the researchers, this approach could lead to the creation of more comprehensive and easily scalable treatment methods in the future. Initial applications may appear in veterinary medicine, while human use still depends on further scientific investigation.
