Researchers, including Shailja Shah from the University of California, San Diego, in collaboration with colleagues from China, the Netherlands, and the USA, conducted risk attribution modeling. Their findings indicate that Helicobacter pylori infection may be responsible for more than one-fifth of all cases of colorectal cancer.
Data from systematic reviews and meta-analyses regarding the global and regional prevalence of this infection and its epidemiological link to colorectal cancer were used for the analysis. Cancer incidence information was obtained from the GLOBOCAN resource.
The team calculated the estimated hazard ratio and burden by applying the Monte Carlo simulation method. Furthermore, they examined correlations between hazard ratios, Helicobacter prevalence, and the incidence rate of colorectal cancer at the country level. The results of this work were published in the scientific journal eGastroenterology.
