Research conducted at the North-West University (NWU) helps rethink waste management in protected areas, viewing it as an integral part of biodiversity conservation, pollution prevention, and creating opportunities for local communities.
South Africa's protected areas safeguard some of the country's most valuable species and landscapes, yet the waste generated and managed in these locations can put the ecosystems themselves at risk. The work of Professor Claudine Alberts from the Geography and Environmental Sciences department at NWU shows that improper waste handling threatens biodiversity, pollutes sensitive habitats, and weakens conservation efforts. Her research also demonstrates that this problem can be solved through targeted planning, appropriate infrastructure, collaboration, and changes in human behavior.
From understanding pollution to ensuring change
Professor Alberts began her research career by studying persistent organic pollutants in South African aquatic environments. By analyzing sediments, soil, fish tissues, and wild bird eggs, her work helped establish data on the presence, distribution, and ecological risks of these pollutants. Subsequently, her research expanded into waste management, focusing particularly on the role of people in determining the success of waste management systems.
This focus revealed a significant obstacle: in one study, 90% of participants cited behavioral issues as the main barrier to responsible waste management. Negative attitudes, resistance to changing established practices, and limited stakeholder support can undermine even well-designed interventions. These difficulties are compounded by the remote location of many protected areas, as well as insufficient funding and low capacity. This means that waste systems designed for cities cannot simply be transplanted into conservation areas; they require approaches tailored to their unique ecological and operational conditions.
Turning a problem into an opportunity
Although the research highlights serious gaps, it also points to opportunities for creating broader value. Improved waste management can contribute to local employment, skills development, and improved living standards. Education and mentorship can help staff and surrounding communities understand their role in protecting these environments and adopt more responsible practices.

An analysis of the management plans for 21 national parks in South Africa showed that responsible waste management still receives limited strategic attention. Most plans focus on basic waste control, without linking waste management to clear goals, actions, performance indicators, and budgets. Furthermore, the link between waste management and biodiversity conservation is rarely explicitly stated. Addressing these shortcomings would allow protected areas to plan more purposefully, allocate resources more effectively, and assess whether their interventions lead to significant results. This would also establish waste management as an integral component of conservation, rather than an isolated auxiliary function.
Professor Alberts' research is now extending beyond South Africa to examine how best to understand and support responsible waste management in South African protected areas. She stated: 'The future will be shaped by the decisions we make today.' This conviction reflects the study's goal: to generate knowledge that can guide practical solutions and help protect irreplaceable natural environments. Its impact lies in demonstrating that responsible waste management can simultaneously strengthen conservation, influence behavior, and create opportunities for people.
