Aden McCarthy, a former defender for Kaizer Chiefs, made his debut in the Champions League, playing a full 90 minutes at the famous Old Trafford stadium. This match took place sixteen months after his first appearance for Kaizer Chiefs in Polokwane.
At the stadium, known as the 'Theatre of Dreams,' McCarthy fulfilled a long-held childhood dream by participating in the main European club football tournament—the UEFA Champions League. His team, Sabah FK, lost to the hosts, Manchester United, with a score of 4:0 in their first group stage match.
Despite the defeat, this experience will remain with the 22-year-old player forever. Not only did he debut in the tournament and at the iconic arena, but he also played alongside high-caliber athletes, including Bruno Fernandes, who is a current Premier League player and a Ballon d'Or candidate.
McCarthy's rise has been impressive. Just 16 months after his professional debut for Kaizer Chiefs against Sekhukhune United at New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane in May 2025, he stepped onto the pitch in a prestigious European club tournament.
The defender's early success in Europe also highlights the growing influence of South Africa abroad, alongside colleagues such as Relebogile Mofokeng, Shandre Campbell, and Tapelo Maseko. Sabah FC still has seven matches left in the Champions League group stage, including games against Borussia Dortmund, FC Barcelona, Arsenal, and Napoli, to determine its fate in the playoffs.
Domestically, McCarthy will aim to use his continental experience to help Sabah maintain its position at the top of the Azerbaijani Premier League table. His progress is favorable for the Bafana Bafana national team. The new national team coach, Pitso Mosimane, has included McCarthy in the preliminary squad for upcoming CAF qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea this month, as well as in a friendly match against Egypt next month.
If his development continues, McCarthy is ready to become a permanent player for both Sabah and Bafana, proving that a career started in Polokwane can reach the glory of Old Trafford.
