How to extract sunflower seeds from dried flowers without equipment

People are currently incorporating various types of seeds into their diet to improve health, including chia, pumpkin, and flaxseeds. Sunflower seeds are also on this list because they are rich in nutrients such as Vitamin E and magnesium. Due to their benefits, these seeds are in demand, but they can be quite expensive; some sources indicate they cost between 250 and 600 rubles per kilogram in the market. For those on a budget, there is a way to obtain sunflower seeds independently from the flower.

When a sunflower blooms, it attracts attention with its beauty, but after wilting, it remains useful. Seeds are extracted from the dry flowers, which allows for saving money compared to buying packaged seeds in a store. If you grow sunflowers at home, you can collect seeds from its dried flower without needing special equipment or complex methods.

When collecting seeds, do not rush. The seeds begin to mature when the flower gradually wilts after blooming, its petals fall off, and the lower part of the flower takes on a yellowish-brown hue. Another sign of readiness is when the flower head starts to lean downwards, and the plant's leaves turn yellow or brown. Another sign is the appearance of large and well-formed grains in the center of the flower.

A simple test to determine readiness is to run your finger over the dry flower: if the seeds easily detach from the flower, it is time to harvest.

Once the sunflower seeds mature, they become an attractive food source for birds. Therefore, if the flower is still on the plant and drying, it can be covered with a light cloth or paper bag. When securing anything to the flower, avoid tying too tightly to ensure air circulation around the flower, as moisture accumulation can lead to seed spoilage.

When the flower has completely drooped and its lower part has turned yellowish-brown, it should be cut from the plant, leaving the stem about 6–12 inches long. If your region has a lot of rain or high humidity, it is better to cut the flower and dry it indoors instead of leaving it on the plant. You can tie two or three flowers together and hang them upside down in a dry, cool, dark, and well-ventilated place for several weeks.

The simplest step is the extraction process itself. Place the dry flower over a large bowl or bucket and start rubbing the central part of the flower with your fingers. You can also use a stiff brush. As a result of this action, the dry seeds will begin to separate from the flower and fall into the container. If the seeds do not detach easily, do not apply excessive force; it is better to let the flower dry a little longer. After complete drying, the seeds separate much more easily.

After extraction, the seeds must be thoroughly cleaned. They can then be roasted and eaten as a snack. To prepare simple roasted seeds, spread them evenly on a baking sheet and bake at a temperature of about 200 degrees Celsius for 5–7 minutes. If you do not have an oven, you can use the dry roasting method on a gas stove. If you prefer salted seeds, soak them first in salted water for about 15 minutes. Then drain the water, dry the seeds, and roast them for 10–15 minutes or until the desired crunchy texture is achieved. This helps to completely dry the seed coat, making them crunchier.

Some seeds can be saved for future planting. Instead of using all the seeds as a snack, set aside a few high-quality, large, and healthy grains for the next sowing. They should be stored in a dry, clean, and airtight container after they are completely dry.

Thus, growing sunflowers at home provides not only beautiful flowers but also the opportunity to prepare seeds yourself after they wilt. Harvesting seeds from your own plant is an excellent option for gardening enthusiasts who prefer to prepare some of their own food instead of buying packaged seeds in a store.
