During the 11th meeting of BRICS energy ministers held in Gurugram, India, participants identified three key areas for joint work: ensuring energy security and sustainability, energy access and equity, and technology and innovation.
BRICS unites eleven developing and emerging economies whose cooperation spans areas such as energy, science and technology, trade, and finance. Since member countries possess diverse energy resources, development priorities, and power supply systems, they approach solving common challenges differently.
The agenda reflects the heterogeneous conditions of BRICS nations. Ministers affirmed the importance of considering national characteristics, development priorities, and energy trajectories, while calling for the creation of diversified and sustainable energy supply and supply chain systems.
The meeting also emphasized the need for universal access to modern, reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy. Within efforts to support developing markets and economies, issues of affordable financing and capacity building were highlighted. Furthermore, participants discussed cooperation in areas such as renewable energy, biofuels, hydrogen, energy storage, carbon capture, energy efficiency improvement, and other technologies.
Instead of establishing a single model for energy transition, the agenda focuses on collaboration between various technologies and national energy systems.
Smart Grids and Energy Storage
The concept of smart grids and energy storage systems serves as a concrete example of this approach. A smart grid utilizes digital technologies, sensors, automation, and data analysis to monitor and manage electricity grids. Energy storage systems are capable of saving electricity for later use, helping energy systems cope with fluctuations in supply and demand.
Both these technologies are becoming increasingly significant as renewable sources of energy are integrated into electrical systems. During India's chairmanship in 2026, BRICS members launched the BRICS Digital Center of Excellence on Smart Grids and Energy Storage under the BRICS Energy Research Cooperation Platform. This center is designed as a voluntary platform for knowledge exchange, capacity building, sharing experience on policy and regulatory practices, as well as for pilot initiatives.
Members also adopted the BRICS Guidelines on Smart Grids and Energy Storage, recognizing the role of modern, sustainable, and digitized energy systems in ensuring reliable and accessible energy supply and integration of renewable energy and new technologies. This initiative provides BRICS countries with an opportunity to compare experiences and build technical capacity regarding common challenges, and its practical impact will depend on the development of knowledge exchange and proposed pilot projects in various national energy systems.
