The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment of the Netherlands (RIVM) confirmed on Thursday that three people in the Netherlands have died since August after being infected with the West Nile virus. The total number of registered cases has reached 18.
According to the weekly report from RIVM, the virus was diagnosed in the remaining patients after their hospitalization with symptoms, with the exception of one case identified as part of a scientific study.
Last month, RIVM reported the death of a person who was infected with the West Nile virus in the Netherlands.
The West Nile virus naturally circulates among birds, and according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is most often transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.
According to RIVM, about 80% of infections are asymptomatic, approximately 19% cause flu-like symptoms, and about 1% lead to more serious diseases with neurological manifestations.
The World Health Organization stated that there is currently no licensed vaccine for humans or specific antiviral treatment against the West Nile virus. Treatment is aimed at alleviating symptoms, and patients with severe illness receive supportive care in the hospital.
