A minister declared that electrifying the territory is a top priority, given that half of the Angolan population still does not have access to electrical energy. In an interview with TPA, Angola's public television, the government official assured that all public resources are being directed to meet these demands.
He reinforced that the government's efforts, activities, and investments are focused on the country's electrification, aiming to meet community needs. João Baptista Borges emphasized, however, that the country should not waste its current energy production capacity.
According to the minister, Angola needs to utilize the surplus production capacity, which can benefit not only the electricity sector but also other areas of social life. He suggested that exporting this energy could generate advantages for the country, especially if guaranteed by private investment, such as the construction and operation of transmission lines by the private sector.
Borges detailed that planned interconnections with Namibia, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRCongo) can serve as two-way trade routes. Although there is a surplus today, he warned that tomorrow there could be a deficit, allowing one of these connected countries to export energy to Angola.
The minister concluded by emphasizing that it is through this mechanism that the regional energy market will be established, mentioning that the energy 'pools' in Central Africa and Southern Africa will operate based on the exchange of energy imports and exports.
