Education activist Hendrik Macaneta strongly recommends that young people in South Africa pay attention to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges when applying for the 2027 academic year.
Macaneta urged youth to reconsider their career plans after finishing school and prioritize TVET colleges. This appeal came amid the open application period for these institutions, with the deadline set for September 30th.
The activist spoke out against the common notion that TVET colleges are merely a fallback option for those who did not get into traditional universities. He emphasized that attending such a college should not be viewed as a failure or as an option chosen only upon rejection from a university.
He advised future applicants to choose fields of study that align with their personal interests and specific career aspirations. Macaneta highlighted the practical value of vocational training, noting that TVET colleges equip students with the technical skills needed for work and promote entrepreneurship.
He noted that expanding access to fields such as information technology, construction, hospitality, business, and engineering could significantly reduce the high rate of youth unemployment in South Africa. Nevertheless, he warned that fully realizing the potential of this sector requires increased government investment in improving institutional infrastructure and ensuring quality education.
Macaneta added that while TVET colleges provide youth with practical skills for finding employment or starting their own businesses, the government must also guarantee adequate facilities and sufficient equipment for students. Given that thousands of graduates are determining their career paths for 2027, prospective students are advised to explore local TVET offerings, assess labor market needs, and apply before the deadline.
