The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) predicted intense storms on Thursday, the 10th, and Friday, the 11th, with a special focus on the South Region. Areas such as Paraná, Santa Catarina, Mato Grosso do Sul, and parts of São Paulo were included in the alert zones.
Meteorological conditions favorable for storm formation result from the combination of high humidity, a low atmospheric pressure zone, and strong winds. There is a possibility of hail, very strong wind gusts, and even the formation of tornadoes in isolated locations.
Situation of greatest concern in the South Region
The most critical situation was recorded in the South Region. On Thursday, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and the northwestern part of Rio Grande do Sul received a red warning indicating great danger due to storms. The forecast for these locations includes rain, thunderstorms, intense gusts, and potential hail. Additionally, strong downdrafts within the clouds may occur, capable of reaching the surface and causing microbursts.
Among the municipalities affected by the red alert are Umuarama, Cascavel, Maringá, and Foz do Iguaçu, located in Paraná; Chapecó and Joaçaba, in Santa Catarina; and Frederico Westphalen and Nonoai, in Rio Grande do Sul.
On Friday, instability persists throughout the South Region. An orange warning covers central-south, west, and east of Paraná, Santa Catarina, and the north of Rio Grande do Sul. In the other regions of the area, the alert established is yellow.
Instabilities in Mato Grosso do Sul and other regions
In Mato Grosso do Sul, instabilities intensify on Thursday, especially in the southern and eastern regions. The extreme south of the state is under a red alert for great danger, while other areas have orange and yellow warnings. For Friday, rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue in the central-south and east, and much of the state will remain under a yellow alert for storms.
Other states such as Goiás, Mato Grosso, and the Federal District may also record rain and thunderstorms, with low air humidity being a notable factor in some of these areas. São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Minas Gerais will also face unstable weather. On Thursday, there is an orange warning for storms in the extreme southwest and extreme south of São Paulo. Additional areas of São Paulo, the Triângulo Mineiro, southern Minas Gerais, and much of Rio de Janeiro are under a yellow alert.
Forecasts for Friday and other regions
On Friday, rain accompanied by thunderstorms is expected to hit São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and southern Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo entirely. The extreme south of São Paulo maintains the orange warning, while other parts of São Paulo and the Southeast are under a yellow alert.
In the North, Amazonas presents the areas with the greatest instability. In the Northeast, precipitation tends to be concentrated mainly on the coast, while the interior remains drier and hotter.
