In the village of Matrigam, Kashmir, Mumtaza Begum now manages a flock of 500 sheep. However, in 2018, she began her experiment with only 20 animals.
At the age of 33, she initially hoped to secure a government job. After finishing her studies and preparing for recruitment exams, her life path changed due to marriage, motherhood, and domestic responsibilities. Instead of waiting for employment, Mumtaza began looking for opportunities to start her own business at home.
She considered sheep farming a practical endeavor because there is demand for them during weddings, festivals, and for domestic consumption. In 2018, she purchased 20 sheep and started working. Since animal husbandry was often perceived as a male occupation, those around her questioned her decision, but she continued her experiment.
She had no formal business education; she acquired the necessary skills through daily labor, learning about feeding, breeding, health, grazing, and market demand while managing the flock herself.
In 2021, Mumtaza was able to expand her farm thanks to support under the Comprehensive Agricultural Development Program. She received 50 sheep, a subsidy, and assistance in building a proper sheep enclosure.
Mumtaza continued to reinvest the profits earned. Over six years, the flock grew steadily due to daily care, state support, and patience. By 2024, she was managing approximately 500 sheep.
For about six months of the year, the flock grazes in forest areas near Harmukh according to common seasonal practice. This helps reduce feed costs and simplifies farm management.
Today, Mumtaza states that the farm generates about 1 lakh rupees in monthly profit after deducting expenses. Three workers are employed full-time, and additional staff are hired during peak periods.
For her, this farm also serves as a tool for creating opportunities for other people. She notes: 'I help other families. Their children are now receiving a better education.'
Mumtaza's journey began with 20 sheep and the decision to try something different. Today, her 500 sheep have turned this experiment into a livelihood that supports several families.
