As part of the celebration of International Literacy Day, the organization NutriDay noted significant progress at Morozhaneng Primary School, located in Katalehong. The Tubs2Classrooms project has helped improve students' reading fluency, comprehension, and confidence over two years.
In 2024, Danone, in collaboration with DP World, Motus Community Trust, and Pick n Pay School Club, donated a library to the school. A unique feature of the project is that the library was constructed from bricks made from recycled yogurt containers collected by schools across Gauteng as part of Danone's producer responsibility program.
Lian Kizer, a certified nutritionist and Head of Public Relations for Danone Southern Africa, stated: 'After two years, we are proud that the library is fully integrated into the school curriculum, fostering a love for reading and supporting literacy. This project is a prime example of how environmental sustainability can create long-term social impact.'
Shaida Arbi, a member of the board of directors of DP World and Motus Community Trust, emphasized the importance of strengthening basic literacy in South Africa, referencing the 'Reading Panel 2030' report. She noted that access to books, guidance, and conducive educational spaces can transform children's reading experiences and help build the necessary skills for future success.
The improvement metrics were substantial. Among Grade 3 students, the age of reading fluency increased from 7.1 years in 2024 to 9.5 years in 2026, and the age of reading comprehension rose from 8.2 years to 11 years. Furthermore, reading comprehension test results increased from 33.2% to 50%, representing an increase of 16.8 percentage points.
Grade 6 students demonstrated even more significant growth. The age of reading fluency increased from 7.6 years to 10.5 years, and the age of reading comprehension rose from 9.4 years to 14 years. Reading comprehension test results improved from 42% to 70%, which is an increase of 28 percentage points. Kizer concluded that by creating environments where students can discover the joy of reading, they are investing in future success and building sustainable impact in their communities.
